Rodi

5-12 agosto 2006

Rodi !

After spending my holidays intwo of  the Cyclades (Santorini and Mykonos) in the previous summers,  I was back again in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea and the Ellenistic culture.       This time destination … Rhodes!

This  island belongs to the Dodecanese and is  in the southern part of the Aegean Sea. Rhodes is surprising for its multicultural character and its manifold  architectural forms, due to the civilizations that developed and followed each other throughout the centuries. I was  stunned by the presence of  buildings and symbols from the Eastern tradition, which make this  island particularly charming:  I felt I was in Greece and in the East at the same time.

I stayed in Kallithea on the north east coast of the island few km from the capital city and I alternated the  holiday village life, among  afternoons  in the swimming pool and very funny evening shows,  with visits to the places nearby and boat trips.

Rhodes town

Of course my first visit was  to   Rhodes town, which could be  shortly reached by bus from the holiday village.

Rodi, Fortezza S. Nicola

The most picturesque  access to the city is  the port of Mandraki, one of the most remarkable and lively places in the city: the majestic   fortress of St. Nicholas stands at the entrance and behind it you can see three windmills dating back to the age of the Knights (which I’m going to mention later). One of the highlights in this area is the new market, built by the Italians, who ruled the island in the first half of the 900s: it is crowded and full of shops, restaurants and bars.

Un souvenir del Colosso di Rodi – a souvenir of the Colossus of Rhodes

When you are in these places you immediately soak up their magic atmosphere,  created by  myths and legends. The Colossus of Rhodes was thought to be built by the Rhodians in honour of  Helios, the god of the sun and the protector of the island, and it was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. According to some legends, this sculpture stood at the entrance of the port with its  legs  wide apart so as to welcome the ships that passed under it: its feet leaned on two columns where now there are two bronze deer.

Il palazzo del Gran Maestro - the Palace of the Grand Master

Il palazzo del Gran Maestro – the Palace of the Grand Master

We are in the  Collachio, the  part of the old town which was the heart of  public life and  housed the most representative buildings. Here you can admire huge medieval buildings built during  the reign of the Knights of the Order of Saint John between 1300 and 1500. The highlight in the Collachio is the Palace of the Grand Master. Two majestic towers rise at its entrance: it was not only the residence of the Grand Master (the administrator of the Order and of the state), but it also served as a fortress to protect the town.

Rodi, Via Cavalieri

La via dei Cavalieri – the Street of the Knights

The main street in the Collachio, called  the  Street of the Knights  is entitled to the Knights.

Rodi, moschea Solimano

La moschea di Solimano – the Mosque of Suleiman

Il minareto della moschea di Solimano – the minaret of the Mosque of Suleiman

Next to the knights’  buildings you can also see  monuments dating back  to the Turkish occupation: their reign followed the one of the Knights and lasted for almost 400 years. The Mosque of Suleiman with its round shaped dome and its minaret presents the traditional architecture of the Eastern buildings.

Rodi by night

Rhodes by night

In Rhodes culture, fun and   fashionable  life are combined. I was in Rhodes town at night too, when its centre is vibrant and lively: strolling along Sokratous street, one of the main streets, we were lost in the many shops, so big and colourful, full of pottery, as well as icons and carpets: we thought we were indeed in an Eastern bazar!

We also spent a couple of nights in Faliraki, which  can be shortly reached from Kallithea  by bus: it is especially busy (too much, I would say!) at night. The streets are “entertained” by a lot of young tourists, as well as by the loud music coming from the many  disco bars. Moreover you can see a lot of modern luxury hotels and even a statue featuring  the Colossus!

A boat trip

We spent a day on a boat trip along the east coast of the island. On the way we admired a relaxing panorama: quiet bays and beaches and the blue sea framed by  green vegetation.

Rodi, baia Anthony Queen

Rodi, spiaggia T'Afantou

We stopped at:  Anthony Queen’s  bay, entitled to the famous  Hollywood star; Tsambika, where the luckiest ones had a chance to dive from the boat and swim; Stegna where we had lunch: to reach the shore we transferred to a small boat, which was unsteady and rocking as it was overcrowded…fortunately it was a  few minutes’ ride and we all came safe on shore!!! On the way back  we stopped again for a swim at T’Afantou, and the last place to visit  was the thermal springs of Kallithea near our holiday village.

Lindos Acropolis

On the day after the boat trip we visited Lindos, another important town situated halfway  down  the east coast about one hour by bus from Kallithea.

As the saying goes, “you have to experience  everything in life”, so I went on an unforgettable donkey ride up to the acropolis: the path was rough and the little donkey walked close to the wall along the path, despite the  donkey driver’s  cheers  all the way. I arrived at the top with a barked knee, but happy for this unusual experience!

The ride was a bit uncomfortable but absolutely worthwhile, as the acropolis is today one important archeological site: in ancient times it was the administrative and judiciary centre, as well as a fortress. The many  architectural works that embellish this place – temples and sanctuaries dedicated to the ancient gods, ruins of theatres, colonnades that remind of the Parthenon in Athens – make you live back in the gorgeous and glorious times of ancient Greece.

…and over   Lindos, where you find the typical white houses of  Mediterranean countries.

After descending  the acropolis (this time on foot!!), we went for a refreshing swim in the sea and then  we had lunch in a tavern on the beach. In the afternoon we strolled around the lanes in the  town centre and explored the shops. I bought a local souvenir: a red small pottery plate with a little owl painted in its middle.

Symi

Symi

Symi, the island of the sponges

I really recommend you to take an excursion to the small island of Symi, north of Rhodes, about two hours by boat from there. Approaching the island from the sea you will immediately notice the elegant buildings in neoclassical style of the village of Symi: the contrast between their pastel shades and the  bare  rocks is very effective. We stopped here for lunch  along the port and then we went for a walk in the town centre. A nice souvenir to buy here is the  sponges; the inhabitants of the island went sponge diving in the past. They are very soft and can be used for a good scrub!

Rodi, monastero Panormitis

Il monastero di Panormitis – the monastery of Panormitis

In the afternoon we visited the orthodox monastery of Panormitis, one of the landmarks of the island: its bell tower  stands out for its  height, its rich decorations and its bright colours.

One week is not enough to enjoy the beauty of this island… anyway I was happy with this holiday, during which we had the chance to find out many features of this island.

2 pensieri su “Rodi
