Santorini & Naxos

 Agosto 2002

When I left for this island I knew hardly  anything about it, but immediately I was pleasantly impressed and day after day I discovered the beauty of its landscapes and the brightness of its colours. So many young people, several pubs, shops and restaurants make Santorini so lively and entertaining both day and night; at the same time it feels like a place where time has remained still in the past, where   history is  in the air, thanks to the rich and fascinating artistic and cultural heritage of the ancient Hellenistic civilization.

Once upon a time…

Santorini belongs to the archipelago of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea; its semicircular  (originally circular) shape and the features of its beaches,  which I’m going to mention later, are due to its volcanic origin. According to some theories the mythical land of Atlantis was   once settled here and it would have been destroyed after a violent volcanic eruption several centuries before Christ.

Fira, la capitale - Fira, the capital city

Fira, la capitale – Fira, the capital city

A white crib

The capital city Fira overlooks the sea from the  top of a massive cliff and has the typical features of a Mediterranean town: all the houses are  low and   closely built, their whiteness along with the deep blue sea creates an amazing scenery. Among the houses there are several winding  paved lanes crossing the town.

Fira di sera - Fira by night

Fira di sera – Fira by night

The town looks just like a crib,  it is even more enchanting at night when it is all lit up! You can find many  rooms for rent, but there are also some luxury hotels with a swimming pool viewing over the sea, as you can see in this picture. We stayed in Fira, so we were there both by day and by night: the centre is always crowded and lively, shops are open until late  and night life goes on until about two a.m..

Fira, il porto vecchio - Fira, the old harbour

Fira, il porto vecchio – Fira, the old harbour

Fira offers many marvellous panoramic glimpses, in particular one  of the old harbour; it can be reached either walking down the steps of a long winding path or on a donkey. Donkeys are frequently used as  “means of transport”  here.

Typical shops in Fira are the luxury jewelleries, the shops that sell hand- embroidered towels and the shops that sell objects of the local Greek tradition,  such as pottery and terracotta amphoras or vases: they have bright colours  and are  richly decorated. You can often buy souvenirs featuring cats of different sizes sleeping in baskests. In the shop in the photo there is a real cat too,  it  is having a nap in the cool shadow under a table!  Cats here are everywhere!

Santorini, chiesa ortodossa

Orthodox  white churches with blue windows and domes are common in Santorini and  they are  one of its most remarkable symbols. In fact white and blue are the typical colours of the island and along with the beautiful purple bougainvillea they create a really romantic picture!

Our typical day: no need to hurry!

Our days followed the traditional Mediterranean  routine: we woke up around 10 a.m. and had thick Greek yogurt and honey for breakfast at our hotel; then we walked along the main street in Fira to the central square where we took the bus to the beaches: the buses travelled frequently, even though  the schedules  displayed weren’t always respected and we had to  wait patiently for a long time! We usually had a quick lunch on the beach  about 2 p.m. and in the evening we sometimes stopped for dinner in one of the taverns nearby,  never before 10 – 10.30 p.m.!

Santorini, Monolithos

The beaches are of volcanic matter and have different features: the most popular ones we visited were Kamari a long, large, dark pebbled beach with facilities, small shops and bars; Perissa, a long, dark, fine-grained sand beach; Vlichada, a pebbly sand beach, not very crowded; Monolithos, near the airport, a dark fine-grained sand beach  often windswept.

Our days were spent either relaxing on the beach and swimming in the sea or visiting the most popular places of the island and the sites that remind us of the glorious past of  the  Hellenic civilization. One of those places is  the archeological site of Akrotiri few km away from Fira. A prehistoric settlement    was uncovered there: it belonged to the  Minoans who inhabited the islands of the Aegean Sea  in the past. You can see the remains of the buildings, vases and furniture, everyday life objects and wall paintings that are well preserved.

We reached two of the most popular and worth seeing beaches in Santorini, near the village of Akrotiri.

Santorini, Red Beach

Santorini, Spiaggia Rossa- Red Beach

The Red Beach is named after its red volcanic rocks: the  contrast with the blue sea creates a stunning effect. It’s a large organized beach, protected from streams and draughts as it is  in an inlet. We swam and then had lunch here in a small tavern overlooking the sea where we enjoyed a traditional Greek salad with tomatoes, onions (a lot of them!), olives and cucumbers.

Santorini, White Beach

Santorini, Spiaggia Bianca – White Beach

A few minutes’ boat ride took us from the red rocks of the Red Beach to the huge white cliffs of the White beach: it is quieter than the Red Beach, with smaller and less crowded  bays covered with white pebbles.

Nea Kameni

Nea Kameni

We went on a boat excursion to the island of Nea Kameni  few km away from Santorini: you can see it from one of Fira’s many panoramic terraces. This round volcanic island was formed as a result of the lavic flows occurred over the centuries. The sun was burning, we went up a path and in half an hour we reached the craters that are still active: here you can breathe a strong smell of sulfur and from the top you can enjoy a gorgeous view over the sea and the surrounding islands.

We moved from Nea Kameni to the near volcanic islet of Palea Kameni  for the Hot Springs: you can dive from the boat and swim in the healthy thermal waters. We aren’t good swimmers, therefore we stayed on the boat and watched enviously the lucky people in the sea!

Palea Kameni, Hot Springs

Palea Kameni, Hot Springs

This photo shows a charming mix of colours: the black volcanic rock, the  blue-green sea that turns rust red near the mainland and the bright white orthodox chapel dedicated to sailors.

Santorini, Oia

Oia

In Santorini you can’t miss Oia: it’s a town in the northern part of the island, on the  top of a cliff  too,  as picturesque as Fira. The white houses dominate the landscape,  lanes full of shops and boutique cross the town and you can also admire the windmills.

Santorini, Oia tramonto

Tramonto a Oia – sunset in Oia

An unforgettable sunset

Like Fira Oia offers marvellous panoramas but  everyone comes here to see the sunset into the sea… and so did we.  We waited  long  for this magic moment with a lot of other people; unfortunately some clouds   didn’t allow us to see the sun setting and finally vanishing into the sea! However it was a really exciting scene, one of the best memories in this  journey! We immortalized with this shot  a cloud with a curious shape that looked like a hat resting on the sun.

Santorini, campanile

The bell towers of Santorini’s churches are symbolic features: in this photo taken in Oia just after the sunset they face  the sea.

We had dinner in Oia, after that we took the bus back to Fira.

Discovering Naxos

During our stay we decided to spend a couple of days in the nearby island of Naxos: we packed our rucksacks, got up at an ungodly hour, 5.30 a.m. – it was really hard, considering our usual rising time!! –  and took the bus to the port of Athinios. We took the ferry at 8.00 and got to Naxos at 11.15. The port is in the main town of the island called Naxos or Chora. We went to the nearest travel agency to look for a room – online booking still wasn’t so common at that time! – and we found one room in a small, cosy hotel in the centre of town. In the afternoon we relaxed on a beautiful sand beach where we stopped for dinner, we had pizza. After dinner we strolled along the main streets where there are several shops and clubs. However, in our opinion the streets  weren’t as lively and crowded as the ones in Fira.

We went on a bus tour of the island, our guide spoke Greek, German and French. We visited the inland where many olive trees are grown thanks to its fertile soil; we stopped at the village of Damalas in a workshop where pottery and terracotta vases are made, and I bought a small blue vase as a souvenir. What was amazing here, besides the beautiful handcrafts, were the elderly ladies: they were wearing  black scarves on their heads and long, dark dresses,  as they are  often represented in postcards. Our tour continued to Chalkis the ancient capital of the island and we stopped for  lunch in Apollon in a tavern overlooking the sea.

Naxos, kurous

Naxos,  kouros

We saw the kouros, a colossal unfinished statue dating back to some centuries before Christ and probably dedicated to the god Dionysus or, according to other sources, to the god Apollo.

Naxos, Portara

Naxos, Portara

On the way back we stopped by another important landmark of the island, Portara, near the port of Chora; this massive marble doorway dating back to some centuries before Christ  might have been the entrance to a temple dedicated to the god Apollo.

Naxos, Chora

Naxos, Chora

Portara stands on an islet connected to Chora by a narrow causeway: from here you can enjoy a panoramic view on the blu sea and the white houses of Chora.

After the tour we had dinner on the beach, after that we went back to the hotel to take our rucksacks; we  boarded the 10.50 p.m. ferry and sailed back to Santorini. From the port of Athinios we took a bus at 1 a.m. back to Fira.

Fira, wall paintings

Fira, dipinti murali – wall paintings in Fira

In the last days we spent in Fira we visited the prehistoric museum, where there are the wall paintings uncovered in the archeological site of Akrotiri. They were used to decorate the walls of public and private houses and portray mainly everyday life scenes. They are magnificent works of art among the oldest in Europe.

Time to come back home! The return flight was disturbed by a turbolence   that shook the plane from Puglia to Verona, therefore we were a little  upset but very delighted with our holiday!

Staremo a vedere!
