La prima volta a Londra

Appena arrivata a Londra mi sono tornati in mente i ricordi di quando ero stata la prima volta nell’estate del ’92. Allora avevo soggiornato un mese a Eastbourne, una cittadina sulla Manica, per frequentare un corso di  inglese; ogni sabato effettuavamo una gita in giornata a Londra, ero elettrizzata al pensiero di vederla per la prima volta e ne ero rimasta così entusiasta!

My first time in London

As soon as I arrived in London I remembered the first time I had been there in  summer 1992. I had attended a  one- month English course in Eastbourne, a town on the Channel;  every Saturday we had been on a  day trip to London, I had been so excited to see it for the first time and I had been so delighted with it!

L’anno scorso ho ricevuto la proposta di frequentare un corso di aggiornamento per insegnanti di inglese proprio in questa città…e non ho perso l’occasione  per rivederla  dopo così tanto tempo!

Last year I was offered to attend a refreshing course for teachers of English right there…what a great chance to see it again after such a long time!

Londra è  caotica, dinamica, vivace, piena di rumori e colori, ma allo stesso tempo è testimonianza della grandezza dell’impero britannico e dei sovrani che hanno regnato nel corso dei secoli, e desidera ancor oggi mantenere vive le tradizioni, la solennità e le istituzioni che sono sempre state tipiche della nazione inglese fin dai tempi passati.

London is chaotic, dynamic, lively, noisy and colourful, but at the same time it proves the greatness of the British Empire and of the sovereigns who  ruled throughout the centuries; since the  past   it has always  kept the traditions, the solemnity and the institutions of the British nation alive.

Ho alloggiato in un residence vicino alle stazione della metropolitana  di  St Pancras e da lunedì a venerdì tutte le mattine prendevo la metropolitana per raggiungere la scuola situata  nel  cuore della città. Terminate le lezioni alle 16, mi concedevo una pausa per un cappuccino da Starbucks (una famosa catena americana di caffetterie) e poi andavo alla scoperta…anzi, alla riscoperta della città.

I stayed in a residence near St Pancras underground station and every morning from Monday to Friday I took the tube to school  in the heart of the city. After the end of  the lessons at 4 p.m. I had a break and a cappuccino at Starbucks ( a famous American coffee company), and then I went discovering… rather rediscovering the city.

9 ottobre: sono arrivata a Londra la domenica prima dell’inizio del corso, e nel pomeriggio sono subito entrata nel vivo dell’atmosfera londinese. Ho iniziato la visita  dalla zona ovest, chiamata West End.

9^th October: I arrived in London on  Sunday before the beginning of the course. In the afternoon I immediately got into the  atmosphere of London’s life. The visit started from the West End.

C’erano una volta i punk

Trafalgar Square, uno dei luoghi simbolo. Proprio qui i londinesi festeggiano il Capodanno, uno spettacolo trasmesso dai telegiornali di tutto il mondo. La piazza commemora la vittoria della flotta inglese su quelle di Francia e Spagna nella battaglia di Trafalgar   nel 1805: la colonna di Nelson celebra il famoso ammiraglio a capo della flotta inglese. Mi sono fermata a lungo in questa piazza ad osservare il via vai di persone e gli spettacoli che la animano costantemente. Mi  sono ricordata che la prima volta che ci ero stata  mi avevano colpito i numerosi punk con le loro creste colorate, un mito per quell’epoca…ora non se ne vede neanche l’ombra!

Trafalgar Square, one of London’s landmarks. The Londoners celebrate the New Year right here and the show is broadcast all over the world. The square commemorates  the victory of the English navy over  the French and Spanish in the battle of Trafalgar in 1805: Nelson’s column celebrates the famous Admiral of the English navy. I watched for a long time the hustle and bustle and the shows that  make the square alive. I remembered  when I had been there for the first time the punk had impressed me with  their colourful spiky hair: they were icons then…nowadays  they have totally disappeared!

Trafalgar Square è abbellita  dalle fontane e sullo sfondo domina l’elegante edificio neoclassico della National Gallery, uno dei musei più importanti di Londra che ospita opere d’arte appartenenti a varie epoche.

Trafalgar Square is embellished with fountains and in the background the elegant neoclassical  National Gallery  overlooks the square:  it is one of the most important museums in London and it houses works of art dating from different ages.

Da Trafalgar Square ho raggiunto brevemente a piedi Piccadilly Circus, uno dei luoghi più vitali ed uno dei miei preferiti  della città:  moltissime persone si fotografano davanti alla statua di Eros posta al centro di questa piazza rotonda, e poi si può passeggiare lungo le vie piene di negozi che si dipartono da questo crocevia.

From Trafalgar Square I shortly walked to Piccadilly Circus, one of the most vibrant and one of my favourite places in the city: a lot of people take photos in front of Eros statue in the middle of the round square;  you can stroll along the shopping streets  that branch off  this road junction.

Piccadilly Circus è particolarmente  suggestiva di sera, quando si illuminano tutte le insegne pubblicitarie.

10 ottobre:  mi sono dedicata alla parte più classica e sicuramente più conosciuta di Londra, dove si trovano alcuni degli edifici più rappresentativi della vita e delle tradizioni non solo della città ma dell’intera nazione. Costeggiando la riva nord del fiume Tamigi lungo l’Embankment ho raggiunto Parliament Square: qui si affaccia il maestoso palazzo neogotico di Westminster, anche conosciuto come  Houses of Parliament,  fulcro politico ed amministrativo della città.

10^th  October: I visited London’s  best known and most iconic buildings: they represent the life and the traditions of the city as well as of the whole nation. Walking along the Embankment on the north bank of the river Thames I reached Parliament Square:  the majestic  neo-Gothic Palace of Westminster, also known as  the Houses of Parliament, faces the square; it is the political and administrative centre of the city.

Accanto ad esso ecco il simbolo numero uno di Londra, il Big Ben: in realtà questo è il nome della campana all’interno della torre dell’orologio più famosa al mondo. Il Big Ben, anch’esso in stile neogotico, con i suoi 96 metri d’altezza  è visibile da diversi punti. Sullo sfondo si vede un’altra delle maggiori attrazioni turistiche, il London Eye, la ruota panoramica che celebra il nuovo millennio situata sulla riva opposta del Tamigi: un giro su di essa offre una vista spettacolare sulla città…ci andrò anch’io prima o poi!!!

Next to it there is London’s top sight, Big Ben: this is actually the name of the bell inside the most famous clock tower in the world. Big Ben is in neo-Gothic style, too and with its 96 m height it is visible from different places. In the background you can see another top tourist attraction, the London Eye, the panoramic wheel that celebrates the Millennium: it is on the opposite bank of the Thames. A ride on it offers a spectacular view over the city…I’ll have a go sooner or later!!!

Vicino al palazzo del parlamento sorge la magnifica Westminster Abbey: quest’abbazia in stile gotico ospita da sempre le cerimonie più importanti della famiglia reale: le incoronazioni di molti re e regine, i funerali di lady Diana Spencer ed il più recente matrimonio del principe William con Kate Middleton. Purtroppo ho potuto ammirarla solo dall’esterno  poiché le visite chiudevano nel primo pomeriggio.

Near the Houses of Parliament the magnificent  Westminster Abbey stands: this abbey in Gothic style has always housed the most important royal ceremonies: the  crownings  of many kings and queens, Lady Diana Spencer’s funeral and   Prince William and Kate Middleton’s recent wedding. Unfortunately I could just admire it from  the outside because the visiting times were until  early afternoon.

Da Parliament Square sono risalita lungo Whitehall, una lunga  importante via sede di numerosi palazzi storici e uffici amministrativi e governativi: da Whitehall si vede il famoso portone nero di Downing Street n. 10, dove hanno sede la residenza e l’ufficio del primo ministro inglese.

From Parliament Square I walked up Whitehall, a long important road seat of lots of historic buildings, ministries  and government  offices. From Whitehall you can see the famous black door at 10 Downing Street, the British Prime Minister’s official residence and office.

Passato e futuro

11 ottobre: da ovest verso est: questa è la parte di Londra che mi è piaciuta maggiormente per l’accostamento di stili diversi. Infatti accanto agli edifici di epoche più antiche si trovano delle modernissime opere architettoniche che  rendono il profilo della città davvero affascinante. All’ora del tramonto era ancora più suggestivo!

Past and future

11^th  October: from west to east:  this is the part of London I liked best because of the combination of different styles. You can find ancient buildings next to very modern architectural works, which make the skyline really attractive. It was even more marvellous at sunset!

Eccomi sul Millennium Bridge, moderno ponte pedonale in sospensione in acciaio ed alluminio, costruito per celebrare il nuovo millennio: da un’estremità del ponte sulla riva nord del Tamigi si vede un bellissimo scorcio di St Paul’s Cathedral, opera in stile barocco dell’architetto Christopher Wren, la cui cupola richiama quella della basilica di S. Pietro a Roma.

Here I am on the Millennium Bridge, a steel and aluminium suspension footbridge  that celebrates the Millennium: from one end of the bridge on the north bank of the Thames you can see a wonderful view of St Paul’s Cathedral, a baroque work by architect Christopher Wren: its dome recalls St Peter’s in Rome.

…dall’altra estremità del ponte sulla riva sud del Tamigi, proprio  di fronte a St Paul’s spicca invece la torre della Tate Modern, una galleria d’arte moderna davvero originale poiché è stata realizzata nell’edificio di una vecchia centrale elettrica.

…from the other end of the bridge on the south bank of the Thames, right opposite St Paul’s the tower of the Tate Modern stands out: it is a modern art gallery and it’s unusual  as it was built in an old power station.

Dalla Tate Modern  sono giunta in pochi passi al Shakespeare’s Globe, il teatro che celebra il famoso drammaturgo inglese…una tappa che non potevo perdermi avendo studiato molte delle sue opere!  L’odierno edificio è stato aperto nel 1997 ed è una ricostruzione del teatro dell’epoca dove si esibiva la compagnia di Shakespeare. Da notare il tetto in paglia. Ormai era completamente buio ma le luci  facevano risaltare i motivi geometrici scuri sulla parete bianca.

From the Tate Modern I reached Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre a few steps further: it celebrates the famous British playwright…I couldn’t miss it, as I studied lots of his plays! The present building opened in 1997 and it is a reconstruction of  the original theatre where Shakespeare’s company  performed. The thatched roof is remarkable. It was totally dark but the  lights   highlighted the black geometrical patterns on the white wall.

L’edificio che ero più curiosa di vedere  era però  l’ultramoderno Shard ! Progettato dall’architetto italiano Renzo Piano esso sorge sulla riva sud del Tamigi, un po’ più a est della Tate Modern. The Shard, ossia la scheggia, è così denominato per la sua forma  e per le pareti esterne rivestite in vetro. Avrei voluto salire in cima per vedere dall’alto dei suoi 300 metri il panorama di Londra a 360 gradi, ma purtroppo non era così vicino come sembrava ed il tempo a mia disposizione non era molto, quindi mi sono accontentata di fotografarlo da lontano!

The building I was most curious to see was the ultramodern Shard! Designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano it stands on the south bank of the Thames, a little bit east of the Tate Modern. It is called the Shard because of  its shape and the outer glass walls. I wish I had climbed to the 300 m high top to enjoy the 360 degree  view over London, but it wasn’t as close as it seemed to be and I didn’t have much time, so I could just take a picture of it from far away!

12 ottobre: mi sono diretta nuovamente nel West End. Da Trafalgar Square sono passata sotto l’imponente Admirally Arch per prendere poi il Mall, il viale che, costeggiando St James’s Park costituisce l’accesso a Buckingham Palace, la dimora ufficiale della monarchia britannica.

12^th October: I went to the  West End again. From Trafalgar Square I walked  under the majestic Admirally Arch and took the Mall: this avenue runs along  St James’s Park  to Buckingham Palace, the official residence of the British monarchy.

Qui avvengono  cerimonie e celebrazioni ufficiali:  la cerimonia più celebre è il cambio della guardia che richiama numerosi turisti. Le guardie della regina, con  le loro divise rosse e nere ed i loro alti copricapi di pelo nero sono tra i simboli più affascinanti della nazione.

It is the venue for ceremonies and official commemorations: the most popular ceremony is Changing the Guard, which recalls lots of tourists. The Queen’s guards with their red and black uniforms and their tall dark fur hats are one of the most attractive national symbols.

Da Buckingham Palace sono risalita lungo Constitution Hill fino a Hyde Park, il più ampio e famoso parco reale di Londra: qui ho fatto una rilassante passeggiata tra i fiori ed i simpatici scoiattoli, infine ho fatto una breve sosta dal lago Serpentine.

From Buckingham Palace I walked up Constitution Hill to Hyde Park, the widest and most famous royal park in London: I went for a relaxing walk among flowers and nice squirrels, then I had a break by the lake Serpentine.

Shopping

Proseguendo verso nord ho lasciato la quiete di Hyde Park per tuffarmi  in Oxford Street, una delle vie dello shopping più frequentate: lungo questa antica strada romana si trovano numerosi negozi di souvenir dove si possono comperare per poche sterline diversi oggetti da regalare, ma si possono anche trovare i più interessanti articoli inglesi negli eleganti grandi magazzini Selfriges.

I went further north and left the quietness of Hyde Park; I got into  Oxford Street, one of the busiest shopping streets: along this ancient Roman street you can buy lots of cheap presents in the many souvenir shops, but you can also find the most attractive British goods in the elegant Selfriges  store.

Un giorno con  le celebrità al Madame Tussaud’s

13 ottobre: pomeriggio di divertimento al Madame Tussaud’s, il famoso museo delle cere! Ho trascorso un paio d’ore tra le statue di cera  dei più svariati personaggi famosi, reali – da Shakespeare al presidente Obama, alla famiglia reale inglese, ai Beatles, a Lady Gaga…  –  ed immaginari: nella foto si vede E. T. l’extraterrestre, il mio preferito, mito della mia infanzia!

A day with celebrities at Madame Tussaud’s

13^th October: a fun afternoon at Madame Tussaud’s, the famous wax museum! I spent a couple of hours among the wax figures of lots of popular people, both real – from Shakespeare to President Obama, the Royal British Family, the Beatles, Lady Gaga… – and fictitious: in the photo you can see my favourite one,  extraterrestrial  E.T., a legend of my childhood!

14 ottobre: la settimana stava per finire e mi restava da vedere uno dei quartieri  più conosciuti di Londra nel cuore del West End: Covent Garden.  Qui ci si può perdere tra i negozi, bar e banchetti all’interno del grande mercato coperto, ma anche esplorare le  vie adiacenti altrettanto piene di negozi e pub. Da non perdere i giocolieri, acrobati, ballerini e musicisti che si esibiscono tutto il giorno nella piazza centrale .

14^th October: the week was going to be over and I still had to see one of the most popular areas in London at the heart of the West End: Covent Garden.  You can stroll about in the many shops, cafés and stalls in the big covered market, as well as explore the nearest streets full of shops and pubs. Don’t miss the jugglers, acrobats, dancers and musicians who perform in the main square throughout the day.

15 ottobre: ultimo giorno! Ho  visitato il Globe Theatre con un tour guidato: per chi è interessato al teatro vale davvero la pena. Poi ho comperato gli ultimi souvenir, ed è arrivata l’ora di partire!

15^th October: my last day! I went on a guided tour of the Globe Theatre: if you are fond of drama it’s really worthwhile. Then I bought the last souvenirs and it was time to leave!

Sono stata così felice di essere tornata a Londra!!!

Purtroppo, essendo impegnata gran parte della giornata a scuola non ho potuto vedere tutto quello che avevo programmato: la città è molto grande ed i tempi di spostamento in metropolitana richiedono tempo. Perciò ho pensato che avrei dovuto ritornarci al più presto….

I was so happy to be back in London!!!

Unfortunately I didn’t see all I had planned as I spent  most of the day at school: the city is huge and it takes a long time to travel by underground. Therefore I thought I would be back there soon…
