Trekking a Lampedusa e Linosa

Agosto 2020 – August 2021

I had never thought of a holiday in Lampedusa, until a friend suggested a trekking trip to this island and to the nearby island of Linosa. An unusual experience for me as I’m not particularly keen on sport! It was a soft trekking within my reach and the travel plan also included spending a few hours relaxing at the sea.

In this year when travelling seemed like a pure utopia, as soon as the number of Covid infections  began to drop at the beginning  of summer, we got carried away  and immediately booked the flight to Lampedusa!

Lampedusa, corso, San Gerlando

23 August: let’s go! Fortunately, the flight was not cancelled or delayed by airlines, as it  happened many times  due to the  uncertain travel situation. In a couple of hours, from Orio al Serio airport, Bergamo, we landed in Lampedusa, the southernmost island in Italy belonging to the Pelagie archipelago.

In the afternoon, after meeting the rest of the group – all female! – and the guide – the only man! – we took the hydrofoil to Linosa. The crossing was hard due to the rough sea, but in the evening we cheered up with an excellent dinner and a relaxing walk to see the stars!

Linosa, piazzetta, porto

24 August: the exploration of Linosa begins, also in the Pelagie archipelago, totally unknown to me. Walking through its small centre of town  among the bright pastel-coloured houses, the few shops, few tourists and many cats, you immediately perceive an uncontaminated place, where life flows slowly and quietly, and where, just outside the town, you are totally surrounded by nature.

Trekking sui vulcani a Linosa

Linosa, Monte Vulcano, panorama

Panorama da Monte Vulcano – view from Mount Vulcano

Linosa is a volcanic island and offers a lot of trekking routes on the craters, inactive for 2500 years. Our first excursion was to Mount Vulcano, the highest peak, 195 mt. Linosa is just over 5 km big, so you can enjoy a wonderful 360-degree panorama from the top of the mountain.

We walked around the crater, among the typical Mediterranean vegetation and expanses of prickly pears. Then we went down to  Faraglioni beach, where the numerous rocks enclose coves that look like swimming pools; here we stopped for lunch and for a refreshing bath.

Linosa, Cala Pozzolana, tramonto

Cala Pozzolana al tramonto – Cala Pozzolana at sunset

Romantic evening at Cala di Pozzolana, at the foot of  Monte Nero; this dark sandy beach is particularly enchanting when the sides of the mountain are illuminated by the sunset light and their colour ranges  from yellow to orange to brick red. There is a pleasant sea breeze as you can see from my hair!

Here, while sipping a drink in the only kiosk there is, we watched the sun set into the sea before going to dinner.

Linosa, Monte Rosso, Baia Conte

25 August: today we climbed Mount Rosso, 186 mt. The way was a bit more challenging than the one to Mount Vulcano … when we reached the top, however, we were rewarded again by the beauty of the landscape: you look down the slope with  reddish ground, until you stop at the bottom where you see the lighthouse, a white point, and then you stray in the hugeness of the blue sea.

After going down Mount Rosso we headed to  Baia del Conte, under the lighthouse. The lava flows of the volcanoes gave Linosa the typical conformation of dark rock with a jagged profile. The island looks like a large rock that emerges from the water, creating a striking contrast of black and blue colours.

Linosa, Piscine Naturali

Piscine Naturali

Not far away are Piscine Naturali, where however the water is immediately deep and I could only admire it from the outside! The splashes of water crash on the rocks, forming little waterfalls. Back in the village, we stopped at the marina for an aperitif: no spritz here, but a  coffee and almond granita!

Linosa, Monte Nero

Salita al Monte Nero – going up Mount Nero

August 26: we left for Mount Nero, 107 mt. Today, unlike other days, there was no wind and therefore the intensity of the sun was felt more than usual; in these places there are no trees that offer some shelter. So I had bought an umbrella that came  to protect me … and that certainly did not go unnoticed! The umbrella was helpful even  on non-equipped beaches, where there are few shaded areas.

Linosa, fichi d'India

Merenda con i fichi d’India – break with prickly pears

When we reached the top we had a tasty snack: prickly pears kindly picked up by our guide the day before. And we weren’t the only ones … there are many lizards on the island, a little darker and bigger than the common ones, that come close to people, attracted by food!

Linosa, sentiero turriache

We went down  the mountain and  walked in a very fascinating flat area along the  path Sentiero delle Turriache: this is how Berte Maggiore are called in the local dialect, water birds that stop on the island and nest for about half of the year, and then migrate far to the Atlantic coasts.

In Cala Pozzolana, where we rested at the end of the trek, there is a fence on one side to protect the area where the loggerhead turtles nest. The colonies of the Berte Maggiore and the loggerhead turtles are protected by the Isola di Linosa and Lampione Nature Reserve, a protected natural area established in  2000.

In the late afternoon we said goodbye to Linosa to return to Lampedusa. We left our hearts in this place where it feels like being on another planet. In my opinion, it is not the ideal place if you are looking for a comfortable holiday; some days fruit and vegetables did not arrive as the hydrofoils were unable to travel due to sea conditions; the water is rationed; there are no equipped beaches and little nightlife. Only so many views, wonderful colours and the seaLinosa’s atmosphere is magical at any time of the day!

Trekking a Lampedusa

Trekking in Lampedusa

The hydrofoil took us back to the so-called civilization, luckily the return crossing was peaceful with a calm sea. When  we had arrived on the first day in the early afternoon, Lampedusa seemed sleepy and quiet… in the evening everything is different! Lots of people along the High Street, many shops and bars, live music… compared to the peace of Linosa it seemed to be in Hollywood !!!

Lampedusa, canyon Cala Pulcino

Canyon per Cala Pulcino – canyon to Cala Pulcino

27 agosto: ci siamo recati in autobus fino a Capo Ponente all’estremità occidentale dell’isola.

August 27: we went by bus to Capo Ponente at the western end of the island.  Then we went down the path that leads to Cala Pulcino, one of the most famous beaches in Lampedusa. The beach can also be reached by boat, but we couldn’t miss the opportunity of a trek along this  canyon! The difference in height is not much, the first part of the route is shaded thanks to the vegetation, while further on the plants thin out … but the view of the  sea that slowly approached encouraged us a lot during our trek among the stones!

Lampedusa, Cala Pulcino

Cala Pulcino

Cala Pulcino is stony, but when you enter the water, after the first stretch, the seabed is sandy and not deep … so as soon as we arrived, we took off our hiking boots and went all into the water! The beach is non- equipped, so mind the scorching sun! In this  photo you can see the boats that seem suspended over the turquoise sea!

After lunch we went up the canyon and went to Baia dei Conigli. Another 20 minutes’  walk awaited us, but from the top you can enjoy a beautiful view of the bay and Isola dei Conigli. We finally reached this beach of fine sand, the widest in Lampedusa, and we immediately entered its wonderful clear and warm water for a relaxing bath… a real pleasure! It is not by chance that Domenico Modugno, who spent his summers here, defined it as  God’s pool.

Lampedusa, Isola Conigli

The very shallow water allows you to walk for many metres accompanied by numerous fish, until you reach Isola dei Conigli, an islet in the middle of the bay, whose origin of the name is controversial. Baia dei Conigli  is located within the “Isola di Lampedusa” nature reserve and is also a site where loggerhead turtles lay their eggs.

A boat trip discovering Lampedusa

Lampedusa, costa settentrionale

Costa settentrionale, faraglione Vela – north coast, the  stack called Vela

28 August: the holiday was going to end and, after the  trekking days  a relaxing boat trip was really needed! We toured the island, a great way to get to know it in all its parts and admire it from the sea. The north coast, where the sea was a little more rough, is characterized by high rock platforms, mostly limestone and by stacks such as the one called Vela due to its shape.

Lampedusa, Le Grottacce

The south coast has sandy beaches with shallow water, but also many natural cavities, such as  Grottacce … can you see the shape of Sicily in the rock?

Lampedusa, porto vecchio

Lampedusa, porto vecchio – Lampedusa, the old port

In the evening we celebrated our beautiful holiday with an aperitif on the beach of the old port.

29 August: it’s time to go home, but first we went for the last swim in the sea of Cala Pisana, another sandy and well-equipped beach, before taking the flight that brought us back north in the late evening!

La Porta d’Europa

The Gate of Europe

Lampedusa, Porta d'Europa

La Porta d’Europa – the Gate of Europe

As we know, Lampedusa is sadly linked to the events of the migrants who come here by sea to then look for a better future. This monument with a meaningful name is dedicated to them, the Gate of Europe, inaugurated in 2008. We saw it from the sea during the boat trip. In the centre of Lampedusa it is also possible to visit a museum where objects belonging to migrants who died during the crossings are collected and that were recovered by rescuers.

Visiting these sites, you pause for a moment  to reflect in silence on this dramatic side of Lampedusa, which we often hear about on the news; however, it seems almost non-existent when you are on holiday here carefree … The Gate of Europe invites us to hope and not to forget.

Fantastiche entrambre.
