Alsazia e Foresta Nera

Con un gruppo di amici ho partecipato ad un viaggio organizzato nel cuore dell’Europa, in una zona che nessuno di noi aveva ancora esplorato. Abbiamo attraversato in pullman territori della Svizzera, Francia e Germania e visitato una città importante come Strasburgo, ma anche dei centri minori davvero  caratteristici e graziosi. Il meteo non è stato dei migliori, ma il cielo bigio non ha tolto nulla alla bellezza dei luoghi, come vedrete dalle foto.

25th – 28th April 2019

With a group of friends I took part in an organized trip to the heart of Europe, in an area that none of us had  explored yet. We crossed territories of Switzerland, France and Germany by bus and visited an important city like Strasbourg, but also really  typical and pretty smaller towns. The weather wasn’t the best, but the gray sky didn’t reduce the beauty of the places, as you will see from the photos.

 

 

25 aprile: ci siamo diretti verso la Svizzera e, attraverso il S. Gottardo, siamo giunti a Lucerna, nella Svizzera Centrale,  dove abbiamo sostato nel pomeriggio. Avvicinandoci vedevamo dal pullman il bel paesaggio delle montagne e del lago dei Quattro Cantoni che fanno da cornice alla città. Un’immagine suggestiva è il Kapellbrücke che spicca sull’acqua, un ponte in legno di origine medioevale ornato di dipinti. Il centro storico è vivace, con edifici eleganti dalle pareti  decorate.

April 25th: we headed towards Switzerland and, through the St. Gotthard, we reached Lucerne, in Central Switzerland, where we stopped in the afternoon. As we approached  we could see from the bus the beautiful landscape of the mountains and Lake Lucerne which frame the city. A suggestive image is the Kapellbrücke that stands out on the water, a wooden medieval bridge   ornated with paintings. The old town is lively, with elegant decorated buildings.

In serata siamo giunti a Strasburgo, il capoluogo dell’ Alsazia: questa regione della Francia nord-orientale è situata sulla sponda occidentale del Reno, a ridosso del confine della Germania e della Svizzera. Nel corso dei secoli essa ha subito la dominazione sia francese che tedesca, presentando così tradizioni culturali comuni ad entrambe le nazioni.

In the evening we arrived in Strasbourg, the capital of Alsace: this region in north-eastern France is located on the western bank of the Rhine, close to the border of Germany and Switzerland. Over the centuries it has undergone both French and German domination, thus having cultural traditions common to both nations.

Strasburgo, la capitale dell’Unione Europea

26 aprile: la giornata prometteva poco perché è iniziata con tempo piovoso; trovandoci nella capitale dell’Unione Europea, non potevamo non iniziare la visita proprio dal quartiere delle organizzazioni internazionali: il palazzo del Consiglio d’Europa, la Corte Europea dei Diritti dell’Uomo ed il palazzo del Parlamento Europeo.  Questa è la parte moderna di Strasburgo, caratterizzata  da questi edifici dalla forma avveniristica e la struttura prevalentemente di vetro e metallo.

April 26th: The day promised little as it began with rainy weather; being in the capital of the European Union, we could not but start the visit right from the district of international organizations: the building of the Council of Europe, the European Court of Human Rights and the building of the European Parliament. This is the modern part of Strasbourg, characterized by these futuristic shaped buildings   mainly made of glass and metal.

Poi  ci siamo diretti verso il centro storico, tipicamente nord europeo. Qui si passeggia facilmente a piedi, oppure si può effettuare una gita in battello lungo il fiume ILL, un affluente del fiume Reno, per ammirare la città da una diversa prospettiva.

Then  we headed towards the  typically northern European city centre. Here you can easily stroll on foot, or you can take a boat trip along the ILL River, a tributary of the Rhine River, to admire the city from a different perspective.

Fortunatamente ha smesso di piovere quando ci siamo addentrati nel pittoresco quartiere Petite France, il vero e proprio cuore della città, scoprendone un lato tutto diverso da quello moderno. Qui  la vista si perde tra le numerose case a graticcio con le travi a vista ed i tetti spioventi che fiancheggiano i vicoli e si specchiano nei canali d’acqua. E’ un quartiere storico, risalente al XVI secolo, un tempo  luogo di attività commerciali che sfruttavano l’acqua: mugnai, pescatori e conciatori risiedevano qui. Un esempio di dimora tipica dell’epoca è La Maison del Tanneurs  un’antica  conceria, risalente al 15 secolo, caratterizzata da solai aperti per favorire l’essicazione delle pelli.

Fortunately it stopped raining as we walked into the picturesque Petite France district, the real heart of the city, discovering a completely different side from the modern one. Here there is a stunning  view of the many half-timbered houses with exposed beams and sloping roofs that line the alleys and are reflected in the canals. It is a historic district, dating back to the 16th century, once a place of commercial activities that exploited the water: millers, fishermen and tanners lived here. An example of a typical house of the time is La Maison del Tanneurs, an ancient tannery dating back to the 15th century, characterized by open attics to facilitate the drying of the hides.

Pasqua era trascorsa da poco, e non ci aspettavamo di vedere  le facciate  degli edifici così ricche di addobbi colorati – non solo qui, ma anche negli altri luoghi visitati durante il viaggio-; siamo rimasti piacevolmente sorpresi che questa festività sia così sentita da queste parti.

Easter had just passed, and we didn’t expect to see the facades of the buildings so full of colourful decorations – not only here, but also in the other places visited during the trip -; we were pleasantly surprised that this festivity is so deeply felt in these areas.

La cattedrale di Notre Dame è uno dei simboli della città ed è un capolavoro di arte gotica. Con la sua alta guglia, il rosone e le numerose sculture che impreziosiscono la facciata, essa sovrasta gli altri edifici. L’abbiamo vista alla luce del giorno, ma  di sera con la luce dorata è molto più suggestiva.

Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the symbols of the city and is a masterpiece of Gothic art. With its high spire, the rose window and the numerous sculptures that embellish the facade, it dominates the other buildings. We saw it in the day light, but in the evening, in a golden light, it is much more charming.

Nel pomeriggio dopo pranzo ci siamo diretti a Riquewihr, il luogo  che ha ispirato il film La Bella e La Bestia di Walt Disney, e non a caso!  Le case a graticcio dai colori pastello sgargianti, cascate di fiori ed addobbi pasquali a volontà, lo fanno proprio sembrare  un villaggio di fiaba.

In the afternoon after lunch we headed to Riquewihr, the place that inspired Walt Disney’s film Beauty and the Beast, and not by chance! The half-timbered houses in bright pastel colours, cascades of flowers and plenty of Easter decorations make it look just like a fairytale village.

Intorno, un paesaggio di campagna con una distesa di vigneti: questa è infatti la regione viticola del Riesling, terra di produzione di vini pregiati, come testimoniano anche le numerose cantine, distillerie e liquorerie lungo il corso centrale di Riquewihr.

All around, a countryside landscape with an expanse of vineyards: this is in fact the Riesling wine-growing region, where fine wines are produced, as you can see from the numerous cellars, distilleries and liqueur shops along the main street of Riquewihr.

Nel cuore della Foresta Nera

27 aprile: oggi la pioggia ci ha, ahimè, accompagnato per buona parte della giornata. Abbiamo lasciato la Francia per dirigerci nella Schwarzwald o Foresta  Nera, nel Baden- Württemberg, nel sud ovest della Germania. Il centro turistico maggiore della Foresta Nera è   Friburgo in Brisgovia, sede di una università  rinomata fondata nel 1497.

In the heart of the Black Forest

April 27th: today the rain stayed with us for most of the day. We left France for the Schwarzwald or Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany. The major tourist centre of the Black Forest is Freiburg im Breisgau, home to a renowned university founded in 1497.

Ci siamo subito diretti nel suo centro medioevale, dove troneggia la cattedrale gotica di Münster, una delle più antiche d’Europa,  con il suo campanile alto 116  mt; la pioggia non ha frenato le numerose persone che, sotto l’ombrello, animavano la piazza antistante la cattedrale, per vedere le bancarelle del mercato. Sul lato destro si scorge l’edificio rosso acceso della Kaufhaus, un tempo utilizzata dai commercianti come deposito.

We immediately went to its medieval centre, dominated by the Gothic Münster cathedral, one of the oldest in Europe, with its 116 m high bell tower; the rain didn’t stop the crowd who, under umbrellas, animated the square in front of the cathedral to see the market stalls. On the right side you can see the bright red Kaufhaus building, once used by traders as a warehouse.

Abbiamo trascorso qui soltanto la mattinata, ma mi ha piacevolmente colpito questa cittadina con i suoi numerosi negozi e caffè che la rendono vivace, e soprattutto per l’originalità ed i colori degli edifici. Nella piazza della cattedrale si affaccia la Kornhaus, edificio dall’insolita struttura architettonica adibito inizialmente a sala da ballo, poi a teatro e successivamente utilizzato come granaio.

Il Nuovo ed il vecchio Municipio sono situati nella piazza omonima, adiacenti l’uno all’altro ed utilizzati entrambi come sedi dell’Amministrazione cittadina. Il Vecchio Municipio risale  all’Alto Medioevo, quando Friburgo era già un centro fiorente, ma l’attuale colore rosso è successivo alla seconda guerra mondiale, quando l’edificio fu danneggiato e quindi ricostruito. Il Nuovo Municipio sembra in realtà di foggia meno moderna di quello vecchio: in effetti la sua costruzione è precedente a quella del Vecchio Municipio, ma il suo utilizzo come sede amministrativa è successivo.

The New and Old Town Halls are located in the square of the same name, adjacent to each other and both used as headquarters of the city administration. The Old Town Hall dates back to the early Middle Ages, when Freiburg was already a thriving centre, but the current red colour is after the Second World War, when the building was damaged and then rebuilt. The New Town Hall actually seems to have a less modern shape than the old one: in fact, its construction is prior to that of the Old Town Hall, but its use as an administrative headquarters is later.

Abbiamo proseguito per Titisee, stazione climatica sulla riva settentrionale dell’omonimo lago, dove abbiamo sostato per il pranzo. Il brutto tempo ci ha impedito di passeggiare in riva al lago, in compenso ci siamo seduti in una caffetteria per gustare una fetta di Schwarzwälder kirschtorte, la tipica torta della Foresta Nera con la panna, le amarene ed il cioccolato!

We continued to Titisee, a health resort on the northern shore of the homonym lake, where we stopped for lunch. Bad weather prevented us from walking by the lake, but we sat down in a café to enjoy a slice of Schwarzwälder kirschtorte, the typical Black Forest cake with cream, sour cherries and chocolate!

Nel pomeriggio abbiamo sostato a Triberg, la capitale degli orologi a cucù, per la cui produzione è rinomata la Foresta Nera: il centro è piccolo ma molto grazioso,  le pareti degli edifici sono dipinte ed adornate di figure, ed i negozi pieni di ogni sorta di orologi e giochi… sembrava  il paese dei balocchi!

In the afternoon we stopped in Triberg, the capital of cuckoo clocks, for whose production the Black Forest is renowned: the centre is small but very pretty, the walls of the buildings are painted and adorned with figures, and the shops full of all sorts of clocks and games… it looked like a land of toys!

Per fortuna la pioggia ci ha concesso una breve tregua, così abbiamo potuto vedere le cascate tra le più alte della Germania, poco lontano dal centro del paese (circa 30 minuti di passeggiata), che si sviluppano su 7 livelli e raggiungono un’altezza di 163 m.

Luckily the rain gave us a short respite, so we were able to see the waterfalls among the highest ones in Germany, not far from the town centre (about 30 minutes’ walk), which develop over 7 levels and reach a height of 163 m.

 La Foresta Nera è sicuramente il luogo per chi ama la natura, con la sua vegetazione lussureggiante e numerosi corsi d’acqua, oltre ai laghi e le cascate. Se si effettua un soggiorno di alcuni giorni si può passeggiare o andare in bicicletta lungo i suoi  percorsi, per poterla esplorare ed apprezzare pienamente i suoi panorami e tutto ciò che essa offre.

The Black Forest is definitely the place for nature lovers, with its lush vegetation and numerous streams, as well as lakes and waterfalls. If you stay for a few days, you can walk or cycle along its paths, so as to to explore it and fully appreciate its panoramas and all that it offers.

Colmar, la Petite Venise

28 aprile: siamo nuovamente in Alsazia per l’ultima tappa del nostro viaggio, la cittadina di Colmar. Forse complice il sole, che  finalmente almeno l’ultimo giorno splendeva, è stato il luogo che più mi è piaciuto in questo viaggio. Essa è anche conosciuta come La Petite Venise, la Piccola Venezia, poiché è attraversata dal fiume Lauch ed i suoi numerosi canali.

April 28th: we are back in Alsace for the last stage of our journey, the town of Colmar. Perhaps thanks to the sun, which finally shone at least on the last day, it was the place I liked best on this trip. It is also known as La Petite Venise, Little Venice, as it is crossed by the River Lauch and its many canals.

Passeggiando per le vie abbiamo notato gli edifici di questo centro medioevale, non tanto per l’architettura a graticcio, già vista nelle altre località, ma per gli elementi stilistici, i colori e le forme che rendono unico ognuno di essi. Tra i più simbolici ed antichi la Vecchia Dogana, sulla piazza omonima, risalente al 1480 e che, come vedete, è tutta addobbata a festa!

Walking through the streets we noticed the buildings of this medieval centre, not so much because of the half-timbered architecture, already seen in other places, but because of the stylistic elements, colours and shapes that make each of them unique. Among the most symbolic and ancient ones is the Old Customs house, on the homonym square, dating back to 1480 and which, as you can see, is all festively decorated!

Uno dei simboli di Colmar è lo storico edificio della casa Pfister, eretta nel 1537;  impossibile non soffermarsi dinnanzi alle sue belle facciate ad angolo  ornate di affreschi ed alle balconate in legno che si affacciano sulla strada.

One of the symbols of Colmar is the historic building of the Pfister house, erected in 1537; impossible not to linger in front of its beautiful corner facades decorated with frescoes and wooden balconies overlooking the street.

Verso ora di pranzo siamo ripartiti per l’Italia, dove siamo giunti in serata. Sicuramente ogni posto avrebbe meritato soste più lunghe, ma questo viaggio mi ha permesso di avere un “assaggio” di  tanti nuovi luoghi, e di scoprire dei territori dove in futuro spero di tornare per conoscerli in modo più approfondito.

Around lunchtime we left for Italy, where we arrived in the evening. Surely every place would have deserved longer stops, but this trip allowed me to have a “taste” of many new places, and to discover territories where in the future I hope to return to learn about them in more detail.

L’Alsazia,  terra delle cicogne

Alsace, the land of storks

 

 

 

 

 

 

 La cicogna è un simbolo dell’Alsazia: grazie alle condizioni ambientali favorevoli di questa regione, questi maestosi uccelli tornano qui verso febbraio – marzo, preannunciando l’arrivo della primavera e simboleggiando prosperità e felicità. Non abbiamo avuto la fortuna di vederne, ma abbiamo visto i loro nidi sui tetti delle case…e abbiamo portato a casa un souvenir che le rappresenta!

The stork is a symbol of Alsace: thanks to the favourable environmental conditions of this region, these majestic birds return here around February – March, heralding the arrival of spring and symbolizing prosperity and happiness. We weren’t lucky enough to see them, but we saw their nests on the roofs of the houses… and we brought home a souvenir that represents them!
