18 – 19 June 2022

This year I  finally had the opportunity to see the  infiorate di Spello, a  flower show in Umbria. I had wanted it for a long time! This event takes place on  the feast of Corpus Domini, the ninth Sunday after Easter, so every year on a different date: this year it was on  June 19 and I had a couple of days off  work, so that I could arrange  the weekend with friends.

As soon as we arrived in Umbria we immediately breathed  a different air: it was hot, but dry, unlike the  annoyingly humid  Po Valley. And then we were immediately pleased at the sight of  the expanses of olive trees and the white, pink and lilac oleanders.

The infiorate are exhibited on Sunday morning, but their preparation takes a lot  of work that begins much earlier. The previous Saturday evening is really charming: while walking through the streets and squares of Spello   you see many people working on  them.

Preparazione delle infiorate – the making of infiorate

There are those who prepare the materials by separating the different types and colours of the flower petals  and collect them in different boxes, which are then delivered to those who arrange them. They are usually young and very young people  infinitely patient and  capable of physical endurance; they spend the whole night on their knees to place every single petal on the previously made drawing; each area corresponds to a type of flower, a truly meticulous work.

Preparazione delle infiorate – the arrangement of infiorate

Contrary to what I thought, the petals are not glued, but just placed, so the arrangement takes place in  a protecting tent, however visible to the public.

We greatly admired these people for working so passionately and joyfully, also helped by  music. There was a big crowd and on that occasion the shops and cafes were open, so there was a great merry atmosphere!

Spello

I took the opportunity to photograph some glimpses of Spello by night. This medieval village in the province of Perugia is counted among the most beautiful ones in Italy. With the intersecting alleys, the stone houses and  many flowers on the windowsills  it is a real jewel.

Le infiorate

Spello infiorate

The next morning, Sunday, the infiorate were finally ready and many people were around them to photograph them under the scorching sun. These floral compositions look like real paintings or carpets; already in ancient times, flowers were used in religious festivals, while the infiorate of Spello on the occasion of Corpus Domini began a few centuries ago and then took on their artistic peculiarity in the early decades of the twentieth century.

The flowers and  the herbs, used for the infiorate, are collected in the weeks before the festival, in the Umbrian-Marche Apennine area and on Mount Subasio.

Many of them celebrate religious subjects related to the life of Jesus, such as this one representing the Trinity. As you can see, it was difficult to photograph the whole floral compositions; next to them there was a drawing on a board, which was perfectly reproduced.

It is better to arrive in Spello quite early on Sunday morning. Before the streets are filled with people, the winner of the infiorata is proclaimed; then in the late  morning, at the end of the Holy Mass, the religious procession takes place:   the bishop carries the Body of Christ as usual, treading on the infiorate and scattering the petals… it’s  a shame that, after such a long preparation, they last so short!

During this weekend we also visited a rather unusual place, La Scarzuola, in the municipality of Montegabbione in the province of Terni. I had never heard of it, while my friends had seen it on a television programme and were intrigued by it. Driving along the two kilometres of dirt road to reach it, you feel you are in a solitary and peaceful place, away from the traffic and noise of the cities.

Originally a Franciscan convent of 1200 stood here; the name Scarzuola comes from Scarza, a marsh grass that San Francesco used in the beginning to build a hut. The convent was then purchased in the 1950s by  architect Tommaso Buzzi from Milan, who created a sort of ideal city around it in the following years.

We had booked a guided tour, which was attended by a large group of people, led by Buzzi’s heir, Marco Solari. It is difficult to describe what you see with words. In the beautiful park surrounding the convent rise the tuff buildings that are inspired by some famous monuments from ancient times, such as the Pantheon, the Colosseum and the Parthenon (you can see them in the picture on the top right); there are also an amphitheatre, stairways, labyrinths, water basins and a  time tower (picture below).

Each element has a symbolic value, also linked to esoteric and philosophical concepts. It feels like being in another dimension: the whole complex represents a sort of dream, an intimate journey of man. Once he has left daily reality made up of material goods, he will find himself through meditation.
