Fuerteventura & Lanzarote

Quest’anno eravamo indecisi su quale sarebbe stata la nostra meta di vacanze per l’estate, così abbiamo considerato alcune destinazioni che ci sarebbe piaciuto visitare: la prima è stata il Salento, bellissimo ma piuttosto caro; quindi perché non andare a Creta? Però eravamo già stati nelle isole greche negli anni precedenti… infine siamo finiti nell’Oceano Atlantico non lontano dalla costa africana, in un luogo che mai avrei pensato di visitare: Fuerteventura.

That year we were not sure about our summer holiday destination, so we considered some places that we wanted to visit: the first was the Salento, beautiful but rather expensive; so why not go to Crete? But we had already been to the Greek islands in the previous years… finally we ended up in the Atlantic Ocean not far from the African coast, in a place that I would never have thought to visit: Fuerteventura.

Quindi detto fatto abbiamo prenotato la nostra vacanza! Non avevo mai manifestato finora particolare interesse per l’arcipelago delle Canarie, a cui appartiene l’isola di Fuerteventura, e sinceramente non ero particolarmente entusiasta di quella meta, invece mi sono trovata davanti ad una bellezza inaspettata!

Destination Canary Islands

So  we immediately booked our holiday! I had never been that interested  in the Canary archipelago, to which the island of Fuerteventura belongs, and  honestly I was not so enthusiastic about that place, but instead I found myself in front of such an unexpected beauty!

L’aspetto peculiare di quest’isola è il paesaggio: nonostante le isole Canarie appartengano alla Spagna, Fuerteventura per la sua posizione presenta infatti delle caratteristiche geografiche e climatiche che richiamano   il territorio africano più che quello mediterraneo,  e che le donano un fascino notevole. Già lungo il tragitto dall’aeroporto al villaggio turistico dove alloggiavamo, abbiamo  notato la terra  arida e selvaggia, e la conformazione montuosa dovuta all’origine vulcanica dell’isola.

The highlight of this island is its landscape: although the Canary Islands belong to Spain, Fuerteventura due to its position has in fact geographical and climatic features that recall the African territory more than the Mediterranean,  and that make it utterly charming. On the way from the airport to the tourist village where we stayed, we soon noticed the arid and wild land, and the mountainous conformation because of the volcanic origin of the island.

Il nostro villaggio sorgeva di fronte alla spiaggia di Jandìa lungo la costa sudorientale. Per chi ama  passeggiare questa località è il luogo ideale, poiché offre  lunghissime e vaste distese di bianca sabbia fine; il mare è limpido e di  color turchese ed il fondale digrada lentamente. Una piacevole “brezza marina” (che in realtà spesso era un vento piuttosto forte!) caratterizza questa zona e ci accompagnava sempre durante le nostre  frequenti  passeggiate.

Our tourist village stood in front of the Jandìa beach along the south east coast. For those who love walking this  is the right place, as it offers long and wide stretches of fine white sand; the sea is clear and  turquoise  and the bottom slopes slowly. A pleasant “sea breeze” (which in fact was often a rather strong wind!) is typical of this area and was always blowing during our frequent walks.

La spiaggia è molto tranquilla poiché non è affollata: tra i suoi frequentatori tipici vi sono i nudisti, e questi simpatici scoiattolini che si confondevano con  i ciottoli a ridosso della terraferma; bisognava essere molto discreti ed aspettare il momento giusto per immortalarli in una foto!

The beach is very quiet because it is not crowded:  its typical visitors  are nudists, as well as these cute little squirrels that mingled with the pebbles close the mainland; you had to be very discreet and wait for the right moment to immortalize them in a photo!

Alla scoperta di Fuerteventura

La vacanza era sicuramente all’insegna del relax, ma non potevamo non andare alla scoperta di quest’isola di cui non conoscevamo praticamente nulla! Così abbiamo dedicato una giornata ad un tour guidato di alcuni luoghi significativi, sia nell’entroterra, sia lungo la costa. Il clima sempre ventilato e secco e mai eccessivamente caldo, ha favorito la nostra visita, senza mai farci boccheggiare pur essendo sotto il sole cocente. Non vi sono centri urbani di grandezza o interesse significativi, vi sono però alcuni graziosi paesi o cittadine.

Discovering Fuerteventura

The holiday was definitely relaxing, but we didn’t want to miss the chance to discover this island, of which we knew almost nothing! So we went on a day sightseeing  tour, both inland and along the coast. The climate is always windy and dry and never too hot,  so it favoured our visit, without ever making us gasp  under the scorching sun. There are no remarkably big or interesting urban centres, but there are some pretty villages or towns.

La prima sosta è stata a Pajara, un tranquillo villaggio dove vale la pena visitare la chiesa di Nostra Signora di Regla,  il cui portale è adornato da simboli che sembrano di origine azteca.

The first stop was in Pajara, a quiet village where  the church of Our Lady of Regla is worth a visit: its portal is adorned with symbols that look like Aztec.

Quindi abbiamo proseguito alla volta di  Betancuria,  l’antica capitale dell’isola, il cui monumento più importante è la chiesa di Santa Maria.

Then we continued to Betancuria, the ancient capital of the island, whose most important monument is St Mary’s  church.

Le palme non sono le uniche piante che crescono tra le distese aride: in questa foto infatti esse fanno da sfondo alle coltivazioni di aloe vera nei dintorni del villaggio di Tiscamanita.  Qui è anche  possibile visitare un laboratorio ed acquistare  prodotti a base di questa pianta.

Palm trees are not the only plants that grow in the dry lands: in this photo, in fact, they are the background to the aloe vera cultivations around the village of Tiscamanita. Here you can also visit a laboratory and buy products made from this plant.

Eccoci finalmente nel deserto! Come preannunciato all’inizio del tour, la ciliegina sulla torta  è stata la visita al Parco naturale delle dune di Corralejo, situata nella parte settentrionale di Fuerteventura:  qui la nostra guida ci ha invitato a toglierci le scarpe e, tenendoci per mano, a correre tutti insieme su e giù per queste immense distese di sabbia che arrivano fino al mare. La sabbia  bianca che sembra estendersi all’infinito ed il mare dal  colore blu intenso sullo sfondo offrono uno spettacolo eccezionale.

Here we are in the desert at last! As announced before the beginning of the tour, the best  was the visit to the Corralejo dunes Natural Park, located in the north of Fuerteventura: here our guide invited us to take off our shoes and, holding hands, to run all together up and down these vast expanses of sand that reach the sea. The infinite white sand  and the deep blue sea in the background offer a unique scenery.

Verso Lanzarote

Non contenti di aver scoperto le bellezze di Fuerteventura, abbiamo deciso di effettuare una seconda gita in giornata alla vicina isola di Lanzarote, anch’essa appartenente all’arcipelago delle Canarie.

Heading to Lanzarote

The beauty of Fuerteventura was not enough for us, so we decided to go on a second day trip to the nearby island of Lanzarote, also belonging to the Canary archipelago.

Come Fuerteventura, anche Lanzarote è di origine vulcanica. La maggior parte della nostra escursione si è svolta nel parco nazionale del Timanfaya, nella parte sud occidentale dell’isola, nel quale si trova l’omonimo vulcano. A bordo di un pullman abbiamo attraversato un paesaggio suggestivo: i numerosi crateri vulcanici, la terra di colore nero o rossastro, l’assenza di vegetazione ed una nebbiolina che avvolgeva  tutto… ci sembrava davvero di essere sulla luna!

Like Fuerteventura, Lanzarote is  volcanic. Most of our excursion took place in the Timanfaya National Park, in the southwestern part of the island, where there is the homonymous volcano. Aboard a coach we went through a picturesque landscape: the many volcanic craters, the  black or reddish land, the absence of vegetation and a mist that enveloped everything … it really seemed to be on the moon!

Abbiamo poi proseguito verso un territorio chiamato la Geria, vicino al parco del Timanfaya, nell’entroterra; qui il terreno fertile vulcanico favorisce la coltivazione della vite che, per essere protetta dal vento, viene messa a terra e protetta da pietre disposte tutte intorno a semicerchio.

We then proceeded to an inland territory called the Geria, near the Timanfaya park; here the fertile volcanic soil favours the cultivation of the vine: to protect it from winds it is put in the ground and  protected by stones placed all around in a semicircle.

Per finire, una sosta presso la costa, dove le imponenti rocce laviche sono a picco sul mare… ed anche qui non manca il vento!

Finally, a stop by the coast, where the imposing lava rocks  overlook the sea… and here it’s windy too, of course!

Sono rimasta molto soddisfatta di questa vacanza, anche se una settimana passa presto. Prima di tornare a casa però non potevo non comperare un souvenir: la capra rappresenta uno degli “abitanti” tipici  di Fuerteventura e, grazie al  suo formaggio  che è presente in molti piatti della tradizione locale, è divenuta uno dei simboli dell’isola.

I was very satisfied with this holiday, even if a week passes soon. Before flying back home  I couldn’t help  buying a souvenir:  goats are one of the typical  “inhabitants” of Fuerteventura and, thanks to their cheese, that is  in many traditional local dishes, they have become one of the symbols of the island.
