Ho sempre immaginato Capri come l’isola dei sogni,  così mondana, meta di vacanza dei vip di tutto il mondo, nonchè luogo dello shopping sfrenato, ma anche  romantica,  con  panorami incantevoli ed un tipico sapore mediterraneo. Durante la mia bellissima vacanza ho scoperto che Capri  è anche piena di storia, cultura ed altre curiosità…leggete l’articolo e scopritelo!

I have always imagined Capri as the island of dreams, with a lot of social life, a holiday destination for VIPs from all over the world, as well as a place for unbridled shopping, but also  romantic, with enchanting views and  typically Mediterranean. 18 luglio: siamo andati in treno fino a Napoli, quindi in taxi fino al molo Beverello dove ci siamo imbarcati sul traghetto per Capri. Giunti  sull’isola al porto di Marina Grande attorno alle 19.00 abbiamo preso la funivia che porta dritto nel centro abitato del comune di Capri e  in pochi minuti abbiamo raggiunto il nostro albergo.

July 18: we went by train to Naples, then by taxi to Molo Beverello port, where we boarded the ferry to Capri. We arrived on the island at the port of Marina Grande around 7.00 p.m and we took the cable car that leads straight into the centre of  Capri town;  in a few minutes we reached our hotel.

Abbiamo subito voluto assaporare la movida del luogo  e quindi abbiamo inaugurato il nostro soggiorno con un aperitivo nella mitica “piazzetta”, il fulcro della città, che pullulava di gente  seduta ai  tavolini dei numerosi bar…ci siamo guardati attorno per vedere se scorgevamo  qualche  celebrità o qualche  famoso miliardario!!  Il suo vero nome è piazza Umberto I, ma è soprannominata così per le sue dimensioni ridotte: è dominata da una caratteristica torre dell’orologio e si affaccia sul mare. Ci siamo tornati tutte le sere dopo cena per un gelato o semplicemente per un giro prima di rientrare in albergo.

We immediately wanted to experience the local  nightlife, so  we inaugurated our stay with an aperitif  in the legendary main square  called the “Piazzetta“, the heart  of the city, which bustled with people sitting at the many café tables … we looked around to see if we saw some celebrities or some famous billionaires !! Its real name is Piazza Umberto I, but it is so named for its small size: it is dominated by a typical clock tower and overlooks the sea. We went back there every night after dinner for an ice cream or just for a walk before returning to the hotel.

Noi avevamo solo la prima colazione presso l’albergo per essere liberi di girare durante il giorno, ma qui si trovano vari snack bar, gastronomie, gelaterie, come anche ristoranti e pizzerie che permettono di pranzare e cenare a prezzi contenuti.

We only had breakfast at the hotel to be free during the day, but there are several snack bars, delis, ice cream parlours, as well as  restaurants and pizzerias that allow you to have lunch and dinner at reasonable prices.

19 luglio:  ci siamo tuffati  fra le onde  del mare per scoprire le   bellezze naturali. In mattinata abbiamo effettuato  un giro in barca dell’isola. Il capitano  della barca  intratteneva i turisti cantando canzoni napoletane!

July 19: we plunged into the waves of the sea to discover the natural beauties. In the morning we took a boat tour of the island. The skipper entertained the tourists singing Neapolitan songs!

Partendo dal porto di Marina Grande abbiamo costeggiato il versante nord:   la navigazione consente di ammirare le coste rocciose e frastagliate  e le numerose grotte naturali, tra le quali la  famosa Grotta Azzurra. Per entrare siamo saliti  a bordo di una piccola barca a remi e  l’ingresso è piuttosto scomodo poiché è molto basso e bisogna sdraiarsi nell’imbarcazione…dentro alla grotta però il mare è meraviglioso e non delude le aspettative!

We departed from  the port, Marina Grande, and sailed along the north coast: while sailing  you can admire the rocky and indented  coastline and the many natural sea caves, including the famous Blue Grotto. We entered the cave aboard a small rowboat and the entrance is rather uncomfortable because it is very low and you have to lie down in the boat … inside the cave, however, the sea is wonderful and you won’t be disappointed!

Proseguendo il tragitto si vedono anche delle conformazioni  rocciose molto particolari, che sono tra le maggiori  attrazioni  di Capri: una di queste è l’Arco Naturale, che descriverò in seguito …

Continuing on you can also see some curious rock formations,  which are among the major attractions of Capri: one of these is the Natural Arch, which I will describe later …

… giunti nella   costa sud  ecco davanti a noi i Faraglioni, questi  imponenti scogli che rappresentano  il simbolo per eccellenza di Capri!

Rilassanti passeggiate

Relaxing walks

Uno degli aspetti che ho apprezzato maggiormente di Capri sono le sue numerose   passeggiate. Dalle affollate vie del centro si raggiungono infatti in pochi minuti  sentieri tranquilli,  immersi nella ricca e profumata vegetazione mediterranea:  costeggiando l’isola  essi portano a belvedere che offrono  scenari mozzafiato. Una di queste è la passeggiata che abbiamo effettuato nel tardo pomeriggio e che  porta al belvedere di Punta Cannone. Le barche laggiù sono dei puntini bianchi!

One of the things I enjoyed most of Capri are its many walks. From the bustling main streets you can reach in few minutes quiet  lanes surrounded by lush, fragrant Mediterranean vegetation:  bordering  the island they lead to viewpoints that offer breathtaking  scenery. In the late afternoon we walked along one of these lanes  to Punta  Cannone viewpoint. The boats over there are white spots!

20 luglio: relax! Giornata  ai Bagni Tiberio, una delle spiagge più popolari dell’isola raggiungibile in barca in pochi minuti da Marina Grande. La località prende il nome dall’imperatore romano Tiberio, che nel I secolo d.C. soggiornò  a Capri e da qui governò l’impero romano: si dice che egli amasse fare il bagno qui. La spiaggia è di ciottoli ed il mare cristallino non è troppo fondo  vicino a riva, quindi anche chi come me non è abile nuotatore, può fare un piacevole bagno!

July 20: relax! Day at Bagni Tiberio, one of the most popular beaches of the island,   a few minutes by boat from Marina Grande. The place is named after the Roman emperor Tiberio, who in the first century AD.  lived in Capri and  ruled the Roman Empire from there: it is said that he loved to bathe here. The beach is pebbly and the crystal clear sea is not too deep near the shore, so even unexpert  swimmers like me can take a pleasant bath!

Nel tardo pomeriggio, rientrati dalla spiaggia, abbiamo passeggiato lungo  le vie del centro tra sontuose boutique,  alberghi di lusso e ville dall’elegante architettura, come la Villa Pompeiana in via Caramelle.

In the late afternoon, back from the beach, we walked along the main streets  past sumptuous  boutiques, luxury hotels and elegant villas, like the Villa Pompeiana in Via Caramelle.

Abbiamo poi preso  via Tragara, una strada molto tranquilla che  costeggia  dei bei giardini    ed altre ville, tra cui quelle dove soggiornarono alcune personalità importanti come Pablo Neruda e lo scrittore austriaco Rainer Maria Rilke. Lungo la via – che conduce  ad un belvedere – ci siamo goduti un bel panorama!

We took via Tragara, a quiet lane that skirts beautiful  gardens  and other villas, among which those where some important personalities such as Pablo Neruda and the Austrian writer Rainer Maria Rilke lived. On the way, that  takes to a viewpoint, we enjoyed a beautiful view!

Trekking

21 luglio: mattinata di “trekking” : abbiamo indossato abbigliamento comodo e percorso un tratto del sentiero di Pizzolungo che porta fino all’Arco Naturale, una formazione rocciosa che in seguito all’azione degli agenti atmosferici ed ai processi geologici nel corso del tempo ha assunto questa curiosa forma. Siamo passati dalla grotta di Matermania, un antro naturale legato al culto delle antiche divinità romane,  e poi scesi fino alla spiaggia situata proprio di fronte ai  Faraglioni: l’ingresso ci è costato la modica cifra di 31 euro, ma si sa, tutto ha un prezzo! In compenso abbiamo goduto da vicino della vista dei Faraglioni, e di un bel pranzetto nel ristorante della spiaggia…dopo il trekking ci voleva davvero!! Pomeriggio di relax e bagni rinfrescanti!

July 21:  “trekking” morning: we wore comfortable clothing and went along  a stretch of the Pizzolungo path that leads to the Natural Arch: this is a rock formation that, due the action of atmospheric agents and geological processes, has taken on this curious shape. We walked past the cave of Matermania, a natural cave linked to the cult of ancient Roman deities, and then down to the beach located right in front of the Faraglioni: we paid   the entrance for the modest sum of 31 euros, but you know, everything has a price! On the other hand we enjoyed the close up view of the Faraglioni, and a tasty  lunch in the beach restaurant … we really needed it after the trekking !! Relax  and refreshing baths in the afternoon!

22 luglio: abbiamo preso l’autobus per effettuare una gita ad Anacapri, il secondo centro abitato dell’isola, situato nel versante occidentale. Rispetto a Capri, Anacapri è decisamente più tranquilla e raccolta, ma è comunque interessante. Giunti nella piazza principale abbiamo preso la seggiovia che porta al Monte Solaro, il punto panoramico più alto dell’isola; qui abbiamo consumato un veloce pranzo al bar sul belvedere…era una giornata particolarmente afosa, ma la bellezza del paesaggio ci ha fatto dimenticare le temperature bollenti!

July 22: we took the bus to  Anacapri, the second  town of the island, located on the western side. Compared to Capri, Anacapri is definitely quieter and cosier, but it is still interesting. Once in the main square we took the chairlift that leads to Mount Solaro, the highest panoramic point of the island; here we had a quick lunch at the bar by  the viewpoint … it was a particularly muggy day, but the scenic beauty made us forget the hot temperatures!

Tornati nel centro di Anacapri, nel pomeriggio abbiamo visto gli edifici più significativi: la villa dal tipico colore rosso pompeiano detta Casa Rossa, la Chiesa di S. Michele, la Chiesa di Santa Sofia  e la Villa San Michele fatta costruire dal medico e scrittore svedese Axel Munthe sul finire dell’800.

Back in the centre of Anacapri, in the afternoon we saw the most remarkable buildings: the villa in  typical Pompeian red, called Casa Rossa,  the Church of St. Michael, the Church of Santa Sofia and the Villa San Michele, which the Swedish doctor and writer Axel Munthe had built at the end of the 800.

Un po’ di storia

About history

23 luglio: giornata di relax in spiaggia presso i Bagni Tiberio. Nel tardo pomeriggio abbiamo preso la strada che dalla piazzetta porta a Villa Jovis (villa di Giove), fatta costruire dall’imperatore Tiberio e situata sull’omonimo monte. I resti della villa sono visitabili e costituiscono un importante sito archeologico, ma  purtroppo noi siamo giunti dopo l’orario di chiusura.

July 23: relaxing day on the beach at  Bagni Tiberio. In the late afternoon we took the lane that leads from the Piazzetta to  Villa Jovis (villa of Jupiter): Emperor Tiberio had it built on the homonymous mountain. The remains of the villa can be visited and are an important archaeological site, but unfortunately we  arrived after the closing time.

Ci siamo comunque gustati la piacevole passeggiata, durante la quale abbiamo  incontrato alcuni residenti “tipici” dell’isola.. . tre bellissimi gatti neri!

However, we enjoyed the pleasant walk, during which we  met some “typical” residents of the island … three wonderful black cats!

24 luglio: in mattinata abbiamo visitato i giardini di Augusto, un giardino botanico a pochi passi dal centro: qui si può passeggiare lungo i numerosi vialetti e vedere le piante ed i fiori disposti su terrazze.

July 24: in the morning we visited the gardens of Augustus, a botanical garden a few steps from the centre: here you can walk along the many lanes and see the plants and flowers  on terraces.

Ma soprattutto da qui si ha una vista impressionante sulla via Krupp, così denominata dall’ industriale tedesco che la fece costruire  agli inizi del ‘900: una serie di tornanti tortuosi a picco sul mare si inerpica dal porto di Marina Piccola fino ai giardini… una veduta magnifica!

 But above all, from here you have an impressive view on the Via Krupp,  named after  the German industrialist who had it built at the beginning of the ‘900: a series of winding bends overlooking the sea climbs from the port of Marina Piccola to the gardens … a marvellous sight!

Accanto ai giardini di Augusto sorge la certosa di San Giacomo, uno degli edifici storici più significativi dell’isola, risalente alla seconda metà del ‘300. Qui ha sede il laboratorio “Carthusia”,  dove si possono acquistare profumi preparati secondo le antiche formule dei frati certosini: ne ho comprata una bottiglietta come souvenir ed il profumo è davvero ottimo.

Next to the gardens of Augustus stands the Charterhouse of San Giacomo, one of the most remarkable  historical buildings on the island, dating back to the second half of the 14th century. The “Carthusia” workshop is located here,   where you can buy perfumes prepared according to the ancient formulas of the Carthusian monks: I bought a small bottle as a souvenir and the perfume is really excellent.

25 luglio: è arrivato il momento di ripartire…troppo presto! Abbiamo raggiunto il porto di Marina Grande a bordo di un taxi cabriolet; abbiamo salutato Capri con un pizzico di malinconia e ci siamo imbarcati sul traghetto che ci ha ricondotto al molo Beverello di Napoli: il mare era piuttosto mosso e la traversata è stata quindi non proprio rilassante. Dal molo Beverello abbiamo preso  un altro taxi che, a velocità folle ci ha condotto alla stazione centrale, dove abbiamo ripreso il treno verso casa.

July 25: it was time to leave…too soon! We reached the port of Marina Grande in a cabriolet taxi: a little bit melancholic we said goodbye to Capri and  we boarded the ferry that brought us back to the Molo Beverello port in Naples. The sea was rather rough therefore the crossing was not really relaxing. From the Molo Beverello port we took another taxi which at crazy speed took us to the central station, where we took the train home.
