 Talvolta capita che i posti scelti così un  po’ casualmente e per i quali non si nutrono grandi aspettative, sono quelli che poi ci sorprendono maggiormente.Non avevo mai preso in considerazione le repubbliche baltiche come possibile meta di interesse, poi dopo aver sentito le opinioni positive di alcune persone che vi erano state, ho pensato…perchè no? Tra l’altro in estate sono un luogo ideale da visitare poichè  non è troppo caldo: ho così proposto il viaggio a degli amici e ci siamo imbarcati sull’aereo per Tallinn, capitale dell’ Estonia.

Sometimes it happens that the places chosen so casually and for which there are no high expectations, are the ones that surprise you the most. I had never considered the Baltic republics as a possible destination of interest, then after hearing the positive opinions of some people who had been there, I thought … why not? Besides, in the summer they are an ideal place to visit as it is not too hot: so I proposed the trip to some friends and we boarded a plane for Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. 

Tallinn is a lively and non-chaotic town, to be visited on foot leisurely to enjoy every aspect and to discover in every corner the mixture of Nordic and Eastern traditions – due to the influence of Russia on the one hand, and the proximity to other northern European countries  on the other – which in my opinion make it so unusual.

Sabato 15 agosto: siamo partiti dall’aeroporto di Orio al Serio (Bergamo) alle 5 del pomeriggio e siamo arrivati a Tallinn alle 9 di sera, ora locale. Abbiamo consumato una cena veloce all’aeroporto e poi abbiamo preso un taxi per l’albergo. Alla sera abbiamo fatto una piacevole passeggiata nel centro storico.

Saturday 15th Aug.: we left  Orio al Serio Airport (Bergamo) at 5 pm and arrived in Tallinn at 9 pm, local time. We had a quick dinner at the airport and then we took a taxi to the hotel. In the evening we went for a nice walk in the old town.

Domenica 16 agosto: dopo colazione abbiamo iniziato ad esplorare la città.

Sunday 16th Aug.: after breakfast we started to explore the town.

I tetti rossi di Tallinn

La nostra visita è iniziata dalla cima della collina di Toompea, a cui si accede  salendo una scalinata: di qui si può godere una meravigliosa vista della città con i suoi tetti dal tipico colore rosso e le guglie delle chiese…e sullo sfondo si può persino vedere il Mar Baltico! Oggi Toompea è sede del governo estone ed ospita l’edificio del Parlamento.

Our visit started from the top of Toompea Hill, that you can reach by climbing a stair: from there you can enjoy a wonderful view of the town, its typical red roofs and the spires of the churches…and you can also see the Baltic Sea in the background! Today  Toompea is the  seat of the Estonian Government and it houses the Parliament.

Sulla collina di Toompea svettano le cupole a cipolla della Cattedrale ortodossa di Alexander Nevsky e quando siamo stati dinnanzi l’abbiamo vista in tutta la sua grandezza ed eleganza  con il suo tipico stile russo.  Completamente diversa invece è la Chiesa luterana medioevale  di St Mary (foto sotto),  testimonianza della varietà di stili che caratterizzano la città.

On  Toompea Hill the onion domes of  Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral stand out and when we were in front of it we could see it in all its grandeur and elegance with its typical Russian style. Completely different, however, is the medieval Lutheran Church of St Mary (photo below), testimony to the variety of styles that characterize the city.

Da Toompea siamo scesi verso la parte bassa del centro storico lungo Pikk Tanav. Questa è una delle due vie principali di Tallinn, e si possono vedere molti antichi palazzi che in passato ospitavano le gilde, corporazioni dei mercanti della città.

From Toompea we walked down Pikk Tanav towards the lower part of the old town. This is one of the two main streets in Tallinn, and you can see a lot of old buildings that in the past housed the guilds, the corporations of the city merchants.

Siamo giunti nel cuore della città dove abbiamo passeggiato tra antichi torrioni medioevali, edifici gotici ed edifici color pastello respirando l’aria di un paese tipicamente nordico.

We reached  the heart of the  town where we walked among ancient medieval towers, gothic buidings and pastel-coloured buildings,  and we  were feeling we were in a typically Nordic country.

Tempo di shopping!

Lungo le vie del centro storico le  bambole ci accoglievano all’ingresso  dei numerosi negozi: esse sono proprio uno dei souvenir più  caratteristici che si possono acquistare qui, ve ne sono di grandi e bellissime!

Along the streets of the old town  dolls  welcomed us at the entrance to the many shops: they are one of the most typical souvenirs  to buy here, there are big and beautiful ones!

Ora di pranzo!

Siamo rimasti stupiti ed  ammirati vedendo arrivare sulla tavola questa  zuppa calda di piselli con una mousse di formaggio e pezzetti di pancetta servita in barattoli a chiusura ermetica…avremmo voluto lasciare intatta questa composizione artistica, ma allo stesso tempo non vedevamo l’ora di assaggiarla !

E la visita è continuata nel pomeriggio!

Lunch time!

We were amazed and admired when we saw this hot pea soup with a cheese mousse and bacon bits served in airtight jars … we wanted to leave this artistic composition intact, but at the same time we couldn’t wait to taste it!

And the visit continued in the afternoon!

Lungo via Vene, l’altra via principale di Tallinn un tempo la via dei ricchi mercanti russi, ci siamo addentrati nel passaggio di Santa Caterina e subito ci siamo ritrovati nel passato camminando tra gli edifici in pietra ed i negozi di artigianato e passando sotto le arcate di questo  vicolo medioevale. Sulla sinistra nella seconda foto si vedono alcune antiche pietre tombali.

Along via Vene, the other main street in Tallinn, once the street of rich Russian merchants, we entered the passage of Santa Caterina and immediately found ourselves in the past walking among the stone buildings and craft shops and passing under the arcades of this medieval lane. On the left in the second photo you can see some ancient tombstones.

Pausa in caffetteria!

Le caffetterie di Tallinn sono molto accoglienti e sono caratterizzate da uno stile ed un arredamento molto originali: durante la visita prendetevi una pausa per sedervi ed assaggiare una deliziosa fetta di torta accompagnata da una tazza di tè!

Break in a café!

 Cafés in Tallinn are really comfortable and have  original styles and furniture: during the visit have a break, sit down and  taste a delicious slice of cake and  a cup of tea!

Lunedì 17 agosto: alla mattina colazione in albergo e poi…pronti ad andare!

Monday 17th Aug.: in the morning  breakfast in the hotel and then…ready to go!!

Ci siamo diretti  nel cuore della città vecchia nell’amena piazza del Municipio,  piena di gente ed attorniata dalle case con i tetti spioventi tipicamente nordiche. Il municipio in stile gotico è il più antico edificio civile di Tallinn ed oggi al suo interno c’è un museo. Siamo saliti sulle torre del municipio e dall’alto abbiamo goduto di una vista spettacolare della città.

We went to the heart of the old city in the pleasant Town Hall Square full of people and surrounded by houses with typically Nordic sloping roofs. The  Town Hall in Gothic style is the oldest building in Tallinn and today there is a museum inside. We climbed the Town Hall tower  and from the top we had a spectacular view of the town.

In Piazza della Libertà, la Colonna della Vittoria con la Croce della Libertà è un monumento  celebrativo della Guerra d’Indipendenza 1918-1920 dalla Russia Sovietica.

In Freedom Square the Victory Column with the Cross of Liberty is a  monument to the War of Independence  1918-1920 from Soviet Russia.

Non  lontano dalla piazza del Municipio siamo passati dalla chiesa ortodossa di S. Nicholas, una delle più antiche chiese di Tallinn la cui guglia gotica vedevamo spiccare dalla collina di Toompea: oggi l’edificio ospita un museo di arte religiosa ed un auditorio.

Not far from the Town Hall Square we passed by the Orthodox church of St. Nicholas, one of the oldest churches in Tallinn whose gothic spire we saw standing out from  Toompea hill: today the building houses a museum of religious art and an auditorium.

Martedì 18 agosto: alla mattina dopo colazione abbiamo preso un tram e siamo andati al Palazzo di Kadriorg: erano gli inizi del XVIII secolo quando, ai tempi dell’Impero russo, questo palazzo in stile barocco fu fatto costruire dallo zar Pietro il Grande per sua moglie Caterina I di Russia come residenza estiva. Oggi esso ospita un museo d’arte ed è proprietà dello stato. L’edificio non è molto grande, ma è circondato da giardini molto belli e grandi con fiori, alberi, fontane e sentieri per passeggiare.

Tuesday 18th Aug.: in the morning after breakfast we took a tram and went to Kadriorg Palace: it was the beginning of the 18th century when, at the time of the Russian Empire, tsar Peter the Great had this Baroque  palace  built for his wife Catherine I of Russia as a summer residence. Today it houses an art museum and is owned by the state. The building is not very big, but it is surrounded by very nice and big gardens with flowers, trees, fountains and walking paths.

Dopo un pranzo veloce abbiamo fatto una passeggiata dal palazzo di Kadriorg fino alla spiaggia; prima di tornare a casa volevamo vedere il Mar Baltico da vicino! Peccato che non abbiamo avuto il tempo di  prendere un traghetto e, attraversando il Mar Baltico, raggiungere Helsinki in Finlandia (ci vuole circa 1 ora e mezza).

After a quick lunch we went for a walk from  Kadriorg Palace to the beach; before returning home we wanted to see the Baltic Sea up close! It was a pity that we didn’t have time to take a ferry and, crossing the Baltic Sea, reach Helsinki in Finland (it takes about 1 hour and a half).

Abbiamo avuto abbastanza tempo per rimirare la distesa blù del mare prima di riprendere in serata il  volo per l’ Italia, certi che avremmo conservato un piacevolissimo ricordo di questo viaggio.

We had enough time to gaze at the blue expanse of the sea before flying back to Italy in the evening, certain that we would have a very pleasant memory of this trip.
