Vamos a Mallorca! Spiagge e paesaggi

Luglio 2019 – July 2019

Quindi… vamos a Mallorca!!

After spending several holidays in the Greek islands I wanted to see something different. For some time I had been attracted by Mallorca: beautiful sea, beautiful beaches, lots of sun, but also lots of culture, good food and evening entertainment. Besides, I imagined this island of the Balearic archipelago, off the west coast of Spain,  a pleasant, lively place, with cheerful and kind people. So… vamos a Mallorca !!

My expectations were not disappointed … quite the opposite! Maiorca is just as I had expected: in a couple of hours’ flight you arrive in a place that truly offers all the ingredients for the ideal holiday in my opinion.

In this post I’ll tell you about landscape and beaches.

Maiorca, Can Pastilla

We chose to stay in Ca’n Pastilla, on the southern coast, for various reasons. The location is about 15 minutes by bus from the capital Palma; there are several places to eat at an affordable price, in fact we often stopped for lunch near the beach enjoying excellent boccadillos. In Ca’n Pastilla we spent a few relaxing days: the sea here is not exceptional, but the very long and wide coastline allowed you to walk and have space between the umbrellas; besides, it is  sandy and access to the water is gradual – which is essential for me as I can’t swim !

Maiorca, Can Pastilla sera

In the evening the bay is very lively and full of people, you can go shopping in the several shops or stop for a drink in many nice typical bars. As in all tourist destinations, a  train tour cannot be missing, so one evening we got on board and went to the nearby town of S’Arenal, even more lively than Ca’n Pastilla, with lots of music, shops and lights!

Maiorca, bar

Una gita in bicicletta

A bike ride

Maiorca, pista ciclabile

In different areas of the island there are many cycle paths, one of which went right through our town nearly as far as  Palma. So one day we got on a bike and … off we went, cycling along a very well-kept path, amid the green of the typically Mediterranean vegetation and the immensity of the blue sea. We cycled about 40 minutes, I know it’s very little, but our aim was to make little effort and relax on the beach! We stopped near Palma and had a refreshing bath in a beautiful sea!

Maiorca, Es Trenc

The most beautiful beach accessible in a day from Ca’n Pastilla is Es Trenc, which is also one of the most beautiful and famous places in Mallorca. The journey was a bit long and we had to take two buses to get to the eastern side of the south coast. There the sea is truly Caribbean and the sand is white, but beware of the scorching sun and there aren’t many umbrellas available to rent!

Along the way from the bus stop to Es Trenc  you can see the salt pans, natural reserves of salt obtained from sea water and which is then sold on an industrial scale mainly within the town.

Sineu

Sineu

A day trip offered us the opportunity to  discover some  hinterland and other corners of the island, too. The first stop was Sineu, a town in the heart of Mallorca where we visited the local market (nothing special to be honest) and the Gothic church of Santa Maria de Sineu.

Maiorca, mulini a vento

Mulini a vento – windmills

Along the way you can see the stone windmills, typical of the Balearic landscape, which were once used to grind grain or pump water.

Then we headed to the north-west coast passing – without stopping – near Alcudia, the ancient Roman capital of the island: originally the Roman name was Pollentia, later it was given the name Alcudia under the Arab domination. Further on we admired the bay of Pollentia from above…

Baia Formentor

… and then  got to the Formentor peninsula at the northern end of the island; there we stopped at the beautiful beach of Formentor, one of the most beautiful bays in Mallorca. Compared to Can Pastilla this area is wilder and richer in vegetation; you can relax under the olive trees, and then dip  into an attractive green and blue sea .

Maiorca, El Mirador Colomer

Vista dal Mirador des Colomer – view from  Mirador des Colomer

On the way back we could see this rocky promontory in all its beauty, especially from the Mirador des Colomer lookout which offers breathtaking views of the El Colomer rock.

In the next post you’ll  discover the cultural aspects of Mallorca by visiting the capital city Palma.
