Egitto e crociera sul Nilo in inverno

26 dicembre  2000 – 02 gennaio  2001

Egypt and Nile cruise in winter

26 December 2000 – 02 January 2001

In this post I will tell you about one of the 26th December 2000 – 2nd January 2001few countries I visited outside of Europe. It’s been nearly 20 years  since that trip … it seemed to be another historical era, when the security conditions of the country were generally good and  we still didn’t have today’s digital cameras or sophisticated smartphones to take perfect pictures. But this land with its millennial history and its unique sceneries  in the world will be forever imprinted in the visitors’ eyes .

Le Piramidi

The Pyramids

Le Piramidi di Giza - the Pyramids of Giza

Le Piramidi di Giza – the Pyramids of Giza

The journey started in the northern part of the country, with one of the famous “Seven Wonders of the Ancient World”, the legendary Pyramids. Located a few kilometres south-west of Cairo, the three great Pyramids of Giza are the tombs of the pharaohs – the ancient rulers of Egypt – Cheops, Khafre and Menkaure. Looking at these buildings dating back to 4000 years ago you can feel the solemnity of their huge size and their appearance (it is believed that their shape  symbolized the rays of the sun that illuminate the earth), and the aim of the kings is fully understood: they had them built  as tributes to their immortal memory   in the centuries to come. They are one of the most remarkable examples of the celebratory function of Egyptian art.

Egyptian art was also closely related to religion. The ancient Egyptians worshipped several deities, which were represented in human, animal or mixed shape. The Sphinx, with its lion’s body  and its human face, features god Ra-Harakhti and is the immovable guardian of the Pyramids; in the evening we watched a very suggestive show entitled “sounds and lights”, where the Sphinx told the story of ancient Egypt by illuminating various colours to the sound of music.

A few km south of Giza is the necropolis of Saqqara, dominated by the so-called Step Pyramid of Pharaoh Djoser: it is considered one of the first examples of pyramids in Egypt, from which the ones of Giza took their inspiration. The steps represent for the kings the ideal way  up to Hearafter.

In these  popular tourist destinations camels are great attractions and you can also enjoy a camel ride.  I could not miss that opportunity of course, so I mounted Antonio, a nice artfully decorated camel: it was great fun, even though you  feel rather strong jolts !

In viaggio verso l’Egitto meridionale

Travelling to southern Egypt

We left Cairo in the middle of the night and with an internal flight we reached  southern Egypt within 1 hour and a half. In a region called Nubia, on the border with Sudan, there is a village called Abu Simbel: here are the most famous Nubian temples and our guide told us their incredible story. Built by the pharaoh Ramses II, in the 1960s they were moved to a more backward and higher place than the previous one, following the construction of the Aswan artificial basin. How was it possible to move them? A complex engineering  work was carried out by a team of experts, who disassembled the whole monument by dividing it into blocks, marking each block with a code and replacing it exactly in the original position.

And there we were, little ones in front of those giants that, despite the many events, after thousands of years still rise magnificently to pass on the history and the memory of the country: it was early morning, about 7 am and they were illuminated by the first rays of the sun. In the photo you can see the temple depicting the Pharaoh Ramses II, with the crown of Upper and Lower Egypt – respectively southern Egypt and northern Egypt.

From Abu Simbel with another domestic flight we travelled a little northward and in about 30 minutes arrived  in Aswan: it was the town that marked ancient Egypt’s  southern border, as well as a strategic place  that favoured commercial traffics with the rest of Africa. There we visited the Great Dam, built in the 1960s to regulate the flow of the waters of the Nile River, and the Philae temple dedicated to Isis, the goddess of fertility.

Crociera sul fiume Nilo

Nile River cruise

In Aswan the second part of our journey began: there   Miss Universe ship  was waiting for us to board a Nile River Cruise, going up  to Luxor. Since ancient times, the Nile has been the main communication route for Egypt and sailing along it is still  the most charming way to discover the country.

Abitazione nubiana – a Nubian home

During the cruise we went for a relaxing ride on a sailing boat called the felucca: after  visiting the botanical garden, we stopped at a typical Nubian village. There you can visit private homes painted in beautiful colours and decorations that symbolize  the ancient traditions of those  welcoming and friendly people.

Venditori - vendors

There was time to relax, sunbathe on the terrace of the ship  (30 degrees on December 31st !) and admire the rich vegetation typical of the Nile Valley. Some of our travelling mates didn’t miss the opportunity to purchase from the  vendors who approached our ship on small boats and raised their carpets on sticks  up to the terrace!

On the banks of the Nile the ancient Egyptians built towns and villages, as well as several temples. At about half way to Luxor we stopped at the temples of Kom Ombo and then we moved on a  carriage  to the temple of Horus in Edfu, dedicated to the falcon-god Horus.

We  arrived in Luxor, a town  on the right bank of the Nile where once was Thebes, the ancient capital of the kingdom of Egypt;  there is the temple of Luxor, situated on the bank of the Nile and incorporated into  the present city, and the monumental complex of Karnak, the most remarkable example of religious architecture in ancient Egypt. There is the scarab named Khepri from the divinity of the sun, a symbol of resurrection and life, which has become a lucky symbol.

On board the ship we also celebrated the New Year and took part in a party organized by the staff with a rich buffet and costume dances.

La Valle dei Re - the Valley of the Kings

La Valle dei Re – the Valley of the Kings

The cruise was coming to an end, but  we never stopped  marvelling at the magnificent architectural masterpieces left by those people: I’m talking about the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens and the temple of Hatshepsut, located in a truly impressive site, an immense stony area. The Valley of the Kings is the largest and most important necropolis in Egypt, along with the Pyramids of Giza: here the tombs of the pharaohs of the New Kingdom are carved in the stone (including  Tutankhamun’s tomb, the pharaoh whose death at a  very young age is considered a mystery and is linked to the legend of its curse), accessible through long descending corridors. Then we went to the Valley of the Queens, located near the Valley of the Kings, the burial site of  the wives of the pharaohs, including Queen Nefertari.

Colossi di Memnon - the colossi of Memnon

Near the entrance of the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens stand the colossi of Memnon, two enormous monolithic statues more than 15 meters high depicting the pharaoh Amenofi III.

Tempio di Hatshepsut - Temple of Hatshepsut

Finally,  the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut, a female pharaoh  during the New Kingdom,  sculpted in a massive  limestone cliff and dominating the plain below.

Our journey ended in Luxor and we flew  back to Italy. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to visit this country and to get in touch with its civilization and I hope you enjoyed a little bit of its beauty by reading this journal.

12 pensieri su “Egitto e crociera sul Nilo in inverno
