Back in London

19 – 20 agosto 2017

Di nuovo a Londra! Avevo terminato il mio articolo Magic London con un “to be continued”… e la visita continua! Avevo detto che ci sarei tornata presto e così è stato.

Back in London! I had finished my article Magic London with a “to be continued” … and the visit continues! I had said that I would be back soon and so it was.

19 agosto: dopo 4 giorni trascorsi a Oxford e dintorni (di cui ho raccontato nell’articolo Oxford and the Cotswolds) ci siamo trasferiti a Londra in pullman e siamo arrivati attorno alle 11.00 in centro a Marble Arch. Qui abbiamo preso la metropolitana  ed abbiamo raggiunto in pochi minuti il nostro hotel, situato  a pochi metri da St Paul’s Cathedral. Dopo aver effettuato il check in abbiamo pranzato in un pub lì vicino: durante il nostro soggiorno inglese non avevamo ancora assaggiato  il piatto tipico per eccellenza,  fish and chips, ossia pesce impanato e patate fritte,  quindi era giunto il momento! Lo abbiamo proprio gustato, anche perché era già primo pomeriggio ed eravamo abbastanza affamati!

19^th August: after 4 days spent in Oxford and surroundings (about which I wrote in the post Oxford and the Cotswolds ) we moved to London by bus and arrived around 11.00 in the centre at Marble Arch. Here we took the underground and we reached in a few minutes our hotel, located a few metres from St Paul’s Cathedral. After checking in, we had lunch in a nearby pub: during our English stay we had not  tasted the preminently typical dish yet, fish and chips, that is breaded fish and chips, so it was time! We really enjoyed it, also because it was already early afternoon and we were rather hungry!

Londra ci ha accolto con un sole splendente, quindi non abbiamo perso tempo  e ci siamo subito tuffati  nel West End, la zona ovest della città dove si trovano i luoghi di maggiore intrattenimento.

London welcomed us with the sun shining bright, so we didn’t waste any time and we immediately joined the West End, the western part of the city where there are the most entertaining places.

Piccadilly Circus. Questa volta l’ho visto in pieno giorno: le persone, il traffico e le insegne pubblicitarie  lo rendono sempre  pieno di colori e pieno  di vita.

Vicino a Piccadilly Circus si trova Soho, noto come quartiere del divertimento e della vita notturna, pieno di negozi,  caffè, locali e teatri. Questa insegna tipicamente orientale indica l’ingresso a Chinatown, il quartiere cinese situato all’interno di Soho, caratterizzato da negozi e ristoranti tipici.

Close to Piccadilly Circus is Soho, known as the entertainment and nightlife district, full of shops, cafes, clubs and theatres. This typically oriental sign shows the entrance to Chinatown, the Chinese district located within Soho, characterized by typical shops and restaurants.

Swinging London

A Soho si trova anche  Carnaby Street, una delle vie più in   ai tempi della swinging London degli anni 60, quando la Gran Bretagna era al centro  della cultura pop mondiale; questa  via attirava molti giovani poichè era punto di ritrovo per artisti e musicisti, ed  era  divenuta famosa  anche per i negozi di abbigliamento e moda. Mary Quant, la stilista che ha inventato la minigonna aveva un negozio proprio qua. Abbiamo passeggiato, preso un caffè in uno dei suoi numerosi bar e le più giovani del gruppo hanno (giustamente!) approfittato per fare un po’ di shopping nei negozi di abbigliamento.

Swinging London

In Soho there is also Carnaby Street, one of the cool streets of swinging London in the 60s, when Great Britain was at the centre of world pop culture; this street attracted many young people as it was a meeting point for artists and musicians, and  became famous also for clothing and fashion shops. Mary Quant, the designer who invented the miniskirt, had a shop right here. We strolled, had a coffee in one of its many bars and the youngest girls in the group (rightly!) took the opportunity to go shopping in the clothes shops.

All’estremità sud di Soho si trova Leicester Square, una delle piazze più animate del West End, grazie alla presenza di spettacoli di artisti di strada, numerosi cinema e teatri. Uno degli edifici più imponenti al centro della piazza è l’Hyppodrome, un tempo una delle discoteche più famose: ci sarebbe piaciuto trascorrere una serata danzante qui… peccato che ora non si balla più, poiché è stata trasformata in un  casinò.

At the southern end of Soho is Leicester Square, one of the liveliest squares in the West End, with performances by street artists, lots of cinemas and theatres. One of the most impressive buildings in the centre of the square is the Hyppodrome, once one of the most famous discos: we would have liked to spend a night dancing here. Now you don’t dance anymore, because it has been turned into a casino…what a pity!

Sosta a Trafalgar Square: ecco alcuni dei simboli più famosi che rappresentano non solo Londra, ma tutta la Gran Bretagna: il Big Ben e gli autobus rossi a due piani.

Stop at Trafalgar Square: here are some of the most famous symbols that represent not only London, but all of Britain: Big Ben and red double-decker buses.

Londra come sempre è travolgente e ti cattura completamente con tutto il suo trambusto e la sua frenesia…il pomeriggio è volato e in un attimo è arrivata l’ora di cena! Abbiamo mangiato in  un locale a Covent Garden: essendo sabato sera vi lascio immaginare l’affollamento e l’atmosfera di festa che si respiravano in questo quartiere  che è uno dei luoghi più amati nel cuore di Londra!

London is always irresistible and captures you completely with all its hustle and bustle … the afternoon flew and in a moment it was time for dinner! We ate in a pub in Covent Garden: being Saturday night you can  imagine the crowding and the joyful atmosphere  you could  breathe  in this district that is one of the most popular places in the heart of London!

20 agosto: la giornata è iniziata nel migliore dei modi! Colazione in pasticcera con vista su St Paul’s Cathedral: cappuccino e scones! (se non conoscete gli scones ne ho parlato nell’ articolo Oxford and the Cotswolds)

20^th August: the day began in the best way! Breakfast in a pastry shop overlooking St Paul’s Cathedral: cappuccino and scones! (if you do not know the scones I talked about them in the post    Oxford and the Cotswolds)

Quindi siamo andati alla scoperta della zona est di Londra; ci ero già stata durante il mio precedente soggiorno e ho voluto tornarci perché è una delle zone della città che merita maggiormente di essere vista. Sia per l’accostamento di edifici antichi e moderni, sia per le forme più originali e bizzarre degli edifici moderni.

Then we went to discover East London; I had been there during my previous stay and I wanted to go back because it is one of the areas of the city that mostly deserves  to be seen. Both for the combination of ancient and modern buildings, and for the most original and bizarre shapes of the  modern buildings.

Siamo entrati nella Tate Modern e saliti al decimo  piano per ammirare il complesso della modernissima City ( il centro finanziario e commerciale di Londra) dall’alto. La torre marrone a sinistra è quella della Tate Modern, mentre sullo sfondo il primo edifico da destra   è  Fenchurch Street, grattacielo commerciale detto anche Walkie Talkie per la sua forma. Agli ultimi tre piani sono situati i giardini botanici pensili detti Sky Garden, dove si possono ammirare varie specie di piante.  Alla sua sinistra sorge the Leadenhall Building, un altro grattacielo commerciale  conosciuto come Cheesegrater per la forma di grattugia.

We entered the Tate Modern and climbed to the tenth floor to admire the modern City  complex (London’s financial and commercial district) from above. The brown tower on the left belongs to the Tate Modern. The first building in the background  from the right  is Fenchurch Street, a commercial skyscraper also known as Walkie Talkie because of its shape. On the top three floors there are the terraced gardens called Sky Garden, where you can admire various species of plants. To its left stands the Leadenhall Building, another commercial skyscraper known as Cheesegrater because of its shape.

Oltre alla suggestiva vista degli edifici lungo il fiume Tamigi, si vede anche il Neo Bankside,  un modernissimo complesso residenziale situato dietro alla Tate Modern.

In addition to the striking view of the buildings along the river Thames, you can also see the Neo Bankside, a very modern residential complex located behind the Tate Modern.

Finalmente sono riuscita a salire anche sullo Shard! Avevo detto nell’ articolo Magic London  quanto mi affascinasse questo edificio: man mano che con i miei amici  ci avvicinavamo ad esso, saliva la nostra emozione… ed eccoci qui, nell’ascensore che in pochi attimi ci ha catapultato sulla vetta! Complice la bella giornata abbiamo potuto fare alcuni scatti suggestivi della vista sottostante: il Tamigi, il Municipio (l’edificio moderno sulla riva destra), il Tower Bridge e la Torre di Londra (sulla riva sinistra).

Finally I managed to get on the Shard, too! I had said in the post Magic London how much this building fascinated me: while  my friends and I were approaching  it, our emotion was rising … and here we are, in the elevator  that in a few moments  brought us straight to the top! Thanks to the beautiful day we were able to take some striking photos of the view below: the Thames, the Town Hall (the modern building on the right bank), the Tower Bridge and the Tower of London (on the left bank).

E’ valsa davvero la pena salire, anche per vedere da vicino la moderna struttura in vetro aperta in cima e le cui punte si stagliano nel cielo.

It was really worth going up, also to see up close the modern glass structure open at the top and its tips standing out in the sky.

Dallo Shard abbiamo proseguito la nostra passeggiata lungo il Tamigi. Ecco un altro scorcio della City: a destra vi è uno degli edifici divenuti più famosi e caratteristici del moderno skyline londinese: 30 St Mary Axe  prende il nome dalla via in cui è situato, ma è conosciuto come Gherkin per la sua forma di cetriolo. Esso ospita uffici commerciali.

From the Shard we  walked on  along the Thames. Here is another glimpse of the City: on the right is one of the most famous and characteristic buildings of the modern London skyline: 30 St Mary Ax takes its name from the street in which it is located, but it is known as Gherkin for its cucumber shape. It houses commercial offices.

Proseguendo ancora si arriva in un punto che offre una vista notevole: a lato del Tamigi sorge il Municipio con la sua forma avveniristica  di una sfera irregolare in vetro e acciaio.

Going further we arrived at a point that offers a remarkable view: beside the Thames stands the City Hall  with its futuristic shape of an irregular sphere in glass and steel.

Di fronte sorge l’imponente Tower Bridge, ponte levatoio ottocentesco sul Tamigi con un camminamento pedonale panoramico. D’obbligo una foto!

Opposite stands the imposing Tower Bridge, a nineteenth-century bridge over the Thames with a panoramic pedestrian walkway. A photo is a must!

Ultima tappa della nostra visita: la Torre di Londra. Essendo già primo pomeriggio non abbiamo avuto il tempo di visitarla all’interno, ma abbiamo camminato tutto intorno per ammirare l’imponenza di questo complesso medioevale. Affacciata  sul Tamigi essa rappresenta uno dei maggiori simboli della città; la sua costruzione risale al 1066 in seguito alla conquista dell’Inghilterra da parte del Duca di Normandia Guglielmo il Conquistatore,  e nel corso dei secoli è servita da residenza reale, fortezza a presidio della città e prigione. Al suo interno sono conservati i gioielli della corona.

Last stop of our visit: the Tower of London. Since it was already early afternoon we didn’t have time to visit it inside, but we walked all around to admire  this huge medieval complex. Overlooking the Thames it is one of the major symbols of the city; its construction dates back to 1066 following the conquest of England by the Duke of Normandy William the Conqueror, and over the centuries it was a royal residence, a fortress to guard the city and a prison. Inside there are the Crown  Jewels.

La nostra visita di Londra si è conclusa qui… ma neanche questa volta sono riuscita a vedere tutto, vorrà dire che avrò un ottimo pretesto per tornarci!

Our visit to London ended here … but not even this time I was able to see everything, this means  that I will have a great excuse to come back there!
