Oxford, Bath and the Cotswolds

Eccomi di nuovo sul suolo inglese! Volevo rivedere alcune località dove ero stata diversi anni fa e   completare la visita di Londra dopo il mio soggiorno dello scorso ottobre (del quale ho parlato nell’articolo Magic London)

Here I am back in England! I wanted to see again some places where I had been many years ago and to complete the visit to London after my last stay last  October (I wrote about it in my post Magic London)

Così ho convinto i miei amici a venire con me: abbiamo formato un’allegra compagnia di 8 persone e siamo partiti alla volta di Oxford dove abbiamo soggiornato per quattro giorni, e successivamente ci siamo trasferiti a Londra per trascorrere gli ultimi due giorni. Abbiamo avuto delle giornate piuttosto  intense tra visite culturali e gite  fuori porta …

I persuaded my friends to come with me: we formed a joyful  group of eight people and left for Oxford where we stayed four days. Then we moved to London where we spent the last two days. We had busy days between cultural visits and day trips …..

In questo articolo vi racconterò i primi 4 giorni.

In this post I’m going to tell you about the first four days.

15 agosto: il giorno della partenza è iniziato in modo un po’ traumatico, infatti abbiamo dovuto alzarci alle 3 del mattino poiché il nostro volo era alle 7.45! Arrivati all’aeroporto di Londra Heathrow abbiamo preso un pullman per Oxford. Il tragitto è durato circa un’ora e mezza e attorno a mezzogiorno siamo giunti al bed and breakfast che avevamo prenotato. Nel pomeriggio abbiamo effettuato un giro esplorativo del centro storico, che distava circa 20 minuti a piedi dal nostro B & B.

15^th  Aug.: the departure day started in a traumatic way, we had to get up at 3 a.m as our flight was at 7.45! From London Heathrow airport we took a coach to Oxford. It took about one hour and a half and around midday we got to the bed and breakfast we had booked. In the afternoon we explored the old town, which was about 20 minutes’  walk from our B &B.

Oxford è una cittadina di piccole dimensioni che si può girare facilmente a piedi.   Carfax è il punto di riferimento da cui iniziare la visita poichè da questa intersezione   si dipartono le  vie  della città vecchia, molto animate e con diversi negozi e caffetterie; sul lato nord ovest si erge una torre sassone, Carfax Tower,  che apparteneva all’antica  chiesa di St Martin del XIII secolo.

Oxford is a small town and you can easily walk through it. Carfax is a reference point to start your tour, as the lively streets of the old town with their many shops and cafés  branch off this crossroads. On the north-west corner a Saxon tower rises: it is called Carfax Tower, it belonged to the 13^th century old St Martin’s  Church.

In  Cornmarket Street you find the half-timbered houses typical of the northern countries and very common in Great Britain…

Questo ponte, chiamato   Ponte dei Sospiri poiché richiama quello famoso di Venezia,  unisce due edifici appartenenti all’Hertford College.

The so called Bridge of Sighs recalls the famous one  in Venice: it links two buildings  of Hertford College.

Alla scoperta dei Cotswolds

16 agosto: giornata rilassante nella campagna inglese: abbiamo effettuato un tour organizzato in minibus e ci siamo recati nei Cotswolds.

Exploring the Cotswolds

16^th  Aug.: a relaxing day in the British countryside: we went on an organized minibus tour of the Cotswolds.

Questo territorio situato a nord ovest di Oxford  rappresenta una delle maggiori bellezze naturali dell’Inghilterra: esso offre uno scenario incantevole di  paesaggi idilliaci, villaggi immersi nel verde e nella quiete, vasti  giardini e cottage in pietra dal tetto in paglia.Non ero mai stata in questa zona ed è stata davvero una bella scoperta!

This region situated  north west of Oxford is one of England’s major natural beauties: it offers a charming scenery  of  idyllic landscapes, quiet villages surrounded by vegetation, large gardens and stone thatched cottages. I had never been there before and it was a great experience!

Il tour includeva anche una visita a Stratford upon Avon,  la città natale del drammaturgo Shakespeare. La cittadina è molto vivace e lungo la via principale sorge la casa dove Shakespeare nacque e trascorse l’infanzia. L’edificio in legno con le pareti a graticcio è una ricostruzione di quello originale  del XVI secolo. Ora esso ospita un museo dove si può vedere l’arredamento dell’epoca ed il laboratorio dove il padre di Shakespeare lavorava come guantaio.

The tour included a visit to Stratford upon Avon, the famous playwright Shakespeare’s birthplace. It is a lively town and in the main street there is the house where Shakespeare was born and spent his childhood.  The wooden half –timbered building  is a reconstruction of the original 16^th century building. Now it houses a museum where you can see the period furniture and the workshop where Shakespeare’s father worked as a glove maker.

Nel cortile abbiamo assistito ad una breve rappresentazione teatrale in costume tratta da una delle sue opere: uno spettacolo coinvolgente, per grandi e bambini!

In the courtyard we watched a short costume  performance taken from one of his plays: it was  fascinating for adults and children!

Dopo pranzo abbiamo proseguito il tour alla volta di Chipping Campden: questo villaggio è costituito da una lunga via principale, lungo la quale abbiamo passeggiato ed ammirato le tipiche case color miele.

After lunch we headed to Chipping Campden:  this  village has a long main road, along which we strolled and admired the  typical honey-coloured houses .

Merenda con il tè e gli scones.

A Chipping Campden abbiamo fatto una sosta in un caffè dove abbiamo fatto  merenda a base di tè e scones: questi panini dolci  vengono serviti con una vaschetta di panna rappresa ed un barattolino di confettura: si tagliano a metà e si spalmano la panna e la marmellata…una vera e propria bomba calorica! Ci sono così piaciuti che li abbiamo mangiati anche nei giorni successivi, a pranzo oppure a colazione.

Afternoon tea and scones

In Chipping Campden we stopped in a café where we had afternoon tea and  scones: these  bread cakes  are served with a bowl of clotted cream and a small jar of jam: you slice them in half and spread some   cream and jam… high- calorie food  indeed! They were so delicious that we ate them on the following days, too, at lunch and breakfast.

Passeggiando per la città universitaria

17 agosto: Oxford è  sede di una delle più antiche e prestigiose università d’ Europa: le residenze universitarie chiamate college e gli altri edifici connessi all’università  costituiscono un patrimonio architettonico di grande pregio ed interesse. Abbiamo avuto una mattinata piuttosto movimentata poiché abbiamo partecipato ad un walking tour, ovvero, un tour a piedi alla scoperta della città universitaria!

17^th  Aug.: Oxford is home to one of Europe’s   oldest and most prestigious universities:  the university residences called colleges and the other buildings that are part of  the university are an architectural heritage of great value and interest. We had a busy morning as we took part in a walking tour to find out more about the university city!

I college non costituiscono soltanto un alloggio, ma sono anche il luogo dove gli studenti ricevono alcuni insegnamenti e studiano. L’Exeter è uno dei 39 college presenti in città ed ha le caratteristiche tipiche di questi edifici: esso ha un’imponente struttura medioevale, alte guglie, un vasto cortile e comprende una cappella, un refettorio ed una biblioteca.

Colleges not only provide accommodation, they are also a place where students have some tutorials and study. Exeter is one of the 39 colleges in the city and  features a typical huge medieval building with high spires, a large courtyard, a chapel, a dining hall and a library.

Lo Sheldonian Theatre è un’altra delle opere architettoniche più rilevanti della città, la cui forma semicircolare richiama il Teatro Marcello di Roma: qui si tengono spettacoli e concerti ed  ogni anno ha luogo la cerimonia della  consegna dei diplomi di laurea.

The Sheldonian Theatre is another one of the most remarkable architectural works in the city: its semicircular shape recalls the Marcello Theatre in Rome. Shows and concerts take place here and every year graduation ceremonies are held.

I luoghi di Harry Potter

Nel nostro gruppo c’erano due persone appassionate dei film di Harry Potter e ad Oxford ci sono dei luoghi imperdibili per loro.

 Harry Potter’s places

There  were two Harry Potter’s fans in our group and Oxford offers them some must- see locations.

La Divinity School è un edifico in stile gotico dove una volta si tenevano lezioni di teologia. La sala interna caratterizzata da un bellissimo soffitto con volte a ventaglio è stata usata come setting per l’infermeria della scuola di Hogwart nella serie di film di Harry Potter. La Divinity School appartiene alla Bodleian Library, una delle più antiche  biblioteche del Regno Unito che custodisce un’ingente raccolta di libri e manoscritti.

The Divinity School is in Gothic style and Theology was once taught here. The inner room has a wonderful fan-vaulted ceiling and it provided the setting for Hogwart School’s infirmary in the series of  Harry Potter films. The Divinity School belongs to the Bodleian Library, one of the Uk’ s oldest libraries, which houses a large collection of books and manuscripts.

Il Christ Church è il college più rinomato di Oxford e attira migliaia di visitatori ogni anno. La Great Hall è l’elegante refettorio dal soffitto con travi a vista e ornata da numerosi ritratti alle pareti; essa è al centro della vita del college poiché è il luogo  dove gli studenti si riuniscono per i pasti, ma dove avvengono anche banchetti in occasioni speciali. Essa ha ispirato la sala mensa  della scuola di Hogwarts… i fans di Harry Potter la riconosceranno sicuramente!

Christ Church is Oxford’s most renowned college and  attracts thousands of visitors every year. The Great Hall is the elegant dining room with a  beam ceiling and its walls are adorned with many portraits;  it is at the heart of college life as it is the place where the students congregate to dine, and where banquets are held on special occasions.  It inspired Hogwart’s dining hall… Harry Potter’s fans will surely recognize it!

Il  vasto cortile del college è noto con il nome di Tom Quad, ed è dominato dalla Tom Tower: all’interno della cupola vi è una campana detta Great Tom che suona ogni sera alla chiusura del college.

The large courtyard is known as Tom Quad and is dominated by  Tom Tower; inside its dome there’s a bell called Great Tom, which strikes the closing time of the college every evening.

Alla sera solitamente cenavamo nei tradizionali pub dove  mangiavamo hamburger con patate fritte e verdure scondite…questa volta volevamo provare qualcosa di diverso e siamo andati al Jamie’s Italian restaurant, la catena di ristorazione di proprietà del  famoso chef britannico Jamie Oliver.  Abbiamo mangiato un’ottima pizza, cucinata in autentico stile italiano! Non è che  avessimo nostalgia della cucina italiana, ma  la cucina inglese non offre grande varietà !!

In the evening we had dinner in  the traditional pubs  and had hamburger,  chips and unseasoned vegetables; we wanted to try something different, so we went to  Jamie’s Italian Restaurant,  the famous British chef Jamie Oliver’s  restaurant chain. We ate  delicious Italian  pizza there! We weren’t missing  Italian food, but British food doesn’t offer  great variety!!

Una gita a Bath, sulle tracce degli antichi Romani

18 agosto: ci siamo recati in treno a Bath, una cittadina a ovest di Oxford. E’ stato necessario fare un cambio ma ci abbiamo impiegato soltanto un’ora e mezza circa ed abbiamo anche avuto uno sconto “famiglia” sul biglietto! Quando siamo partiti da Oxford c’era un bel sole ma il tempo è velocemente cambiato lungo il tragitto  e a Bath siamo stati accolti da pioggia e vento…tipico tempo inglese imprevedibile! Fortunatamente nel corso della giornata c’è stato un leggero miglioramento.

A trip to Bath, in the footsteps of the ancient Romans

18^th  Aug.: we went by train  to Bath, a town  west of Oxford.There was  one change but it took only 1 hour and a half and we had a special “family” discounted ticket, too! When we left Oxford it was sunny but the weather changed quickly during the journey and in Bath we were welcomed by rain and wind…typical unpredictable English weather! Luckily it got a little bit better  over  the day.

A Bath vi sono sorgenti naturali di acqua calda, ecco perché i Romani costruirono un  complesso di bagni termali qui circa 2000 anni fa. Oltre ad essere una sontuosa spa dove rilassarsi e fare il bagno, il complesso fungeva anche da tempio dove i Romani  praticavano rituali religiosi e adoravano le divinità. Esso è stato restaurato sul finire del XIX secolo ed oggi è un museo dove si possono vedere i resti dell’antico complesso: ci è molto piaciuta la visita e ci siamo calati completamente negli usi e costumi degli antichi Romani…infine abbiamo perfino  assaggiato l’acqua termale…non proprio buona!!!

Bath is the location of natural hot springs, this is why   the Romans  built a bathing complex there about 2000 years ago. It was not only a sumptuous spa for relaxation and bathing, but also a temple where the Romans  practiced religious rituals and worshipped  their goddesses. It was restored at the end of the 19^th century and it is now  a museum where you can see the ruins of the old complex. We really enjoyed the visit and stepped back to  the ancient Romans’  habits… finally we tasted  some spa water,  as well.. . not really good actually!!!

Nella piazza vicino all’ingresso delle terme sorge la monumentale abbazia di Bath in stile gotico. Le sue guglie altissime, visibili anche dall’interno delle terme,  offrono una visione davvero affascinante.

In the square next to the entrance to the baths rises the huge Bath Abbey in Gothic style. Its tall spires, visible from  inside  the Roman baths, offer an awesome view, indeed.

Bath ha degli edifici molto eleganti, tra i quali quello più notevole è il Il Royal Crescent. Esso è un complesso di  abitazioni a schiera disposte a forma di semicerchio e decorate da colonne in stile ionico, e costituisce un esempio di architettura georgiana del tardo ‘700.  Al n. 1 si trova un museo dove si può vedere com’era l’arredamento di queste abitazioni. Il Royal Crescent sorge su un’altura  da cui si ammira un bel panorama sul vasto parco sottostante e sulla città.

Bath has elegant buildings, the most remarkable one is  Royal Crescent. It is a a complex of terraced houses in  a crescent shape: they are adorned with Ionic columns  and are an example of the late 18th century Georgian architecture. No. 1 is a museum where you can see what the furniture of these houses looked like. Royal Crescent stands on a hill and offers a beautiful view over the wide park below it and the city.

19 agosto: dalle piccole città ed i villaggi di campagna alla  metropoli! Abbiamo preso il pullman e da Oxford ci siamo diretti a Londra per la seconda parte della nostra vacanza…ma di questo vi racconterò nel prossimo articolo!

19^th  Aug.: from small towns and countryside villages to a metropolis! We took the coach and headed to London for the latter part of our holiday… I’ll tell you about it in the next article!
