Christmas time in Vienna

6 – 9 dicembre 2015

It was some time since I wanted to go back to Vienna where I had been about 20 years ago in spring; this time I planned to visit it at Christmas time, to live the magic of this festivity in one of the most attractive Imperial European capital cities. As soon as I knew I would have a  4 -day long weekend  on the occasion of the festivity of the 8th December, I immediately booked a flight!

Vienna with its majestic and sumptuous buildings  is  charming  and bustling at the same time… in this time of the year the atmosphere is really electrifying there!!

6th December: we left Venice airport at 11 a.m., landed in Vienna at 12 and arrived at the hotel around 1.30 p.m.. Our hotel was very comfortable and close to the city centre, about 15 minutes by underground. Before leaving we had read the  weather forecast on the Internet: it promised sunny days and about 10 degrees above 0, it seemed so good to us as we were in a mainland city in December, but in fact  fog and low temperatures welcomed us and continued throughout our stay! Anyway, we didn’t lose heart, we were too eager to soak up the Christmas atmosphere so, after a quick lunch, we reached immediately  the city centre.

Our expectations were not disappointed, in fact, as soon as we left the underground station, we were in the heart of the city, in  St. Stephen’s Square, and here  were a lot of pretty cottages of the Christams markets all lit up!

Vienna, Duomo

The square is dominated by the majestic St. Stephen’s Cathedral, one of the symbols of the city. The original building is in Romanesque style, but today it presents Gothic elements,  such as the tall spire, and Baroque ones.

Vienna, Haas Haus

Vienna, Haas Haus

Opposite the Cathedral there’s Haas Haus, a modern building with an asymmetrical design, in glass and blue-green marble:  its front reflects S. Stephen’s Cathedral, creating a charming effect, also thanks to the Christmas lights.

Vienna, Graben

From S. Stephen’s Square the main central streets branch off with their many cafés, pastry shops and luxury shops: one of these streets is called Graben, in its middle there’s  the Pestsäule (Plague Column) decorated in Baroque style, built to celebrate the end of the pestilence at the end of 1600.

Magnifiche pasticcerie!!

Wonderful pastry shops!!

When you visit Vienna, you must definitely experience its wonderful pastry shops, and  at least once  take a seat and enjoy a tasty slice of cake served with a cup of hot tea or cappuccino!

Vienna, Demel

Vienna, pasticceria Demel – Demel pastry shop

One of the most elegant pastry shops is Demel: unfortunately we could only admire its window shop, as it was crowded, in fact it was 5 p.m., the right time for a break! Therefore we found another place nearby where we had a  rest and some refreshing food.

Vienna, nuovo municipio

Vienna, nuovo Municipio – the new City Hall

Walking a little bit away from the city centre we saw in the distance a huge buiding all lit up and all wrapped up in the mist. The main clock tower vaguely reminded us of  Big Ben in London: it is the new town hall in Neo-Gothic style, so large that it hosts summer concerts in one of its courtyards and has a ceremony room, as well. The town hall is situated along Rinstrasse, one of Vienna’s main roads, and opposite it stands the Burgtheater, one of the most renowned German theatres in the world in Renaissance style.

Curious we got near the new town hall and we  ended up  in the wide  park in front of it, all decorated for the festivities: there were big red candles at the entrance, Christmas markets  selling all sorts of goods, as well as attractions  for children, such as the little post office cottage, the train station, the crib…and finally, trees adorned with hearts, candies and other sweets…a  Toy-Land indeed!

Vienna, mercatini Natale

Vienna, mercatini Natale

New City Hall markets: the train station

We were so excited by this fabulous place that we didn’t realize time had gone, so we went back to  the city centre for dinner and afterwards  to the hotel.

7th December: after breakfast we got to the city centre and visited the  heart of  Vienna, the Imperial Hofburg Palace: this  building complex, one of Vienna’s main sights, symbolizes the importance of the Austrian  kings and emperors who  followed one upon the other over the centuries and left a sign of their power and fame.

Vienna, Hofburg

Vienna, Hofburg

The Hofburg presents different styles, Neoclassical, Baroque, Reinassance and Gothic and includes the Imperial apartments, the National Austrian Library, the seat of the present Austrian president, as well as squares and gardens adorned with statues of great people in Austrian history.

Sisi’s home

The Emperor Franz Joseph lived in the Hofburg with his wife Elizabeth of Bavaria, better known as the  famous princess Sisi, their children and their entourage. Sisi’s Museum is inside the Imperial apartments.

Un’esibizione  particolare.

A  special performance.

Vienna, scuola d'equitazione

Vienna, scuola d’equitazione spagnola – the Spanish horse riding school

The winter riding school belongs to the Hofburg complex and is home to the Spanish  Riding School, founded by the Habsburg dynasty. In the magnificent riding hall  we saw  the morning training of the Lipizzaner Spanish horses, that are bred here: they perform many  figures  and  athletic exercises  with music,  creating an elaborate and  very original choreography, almost a ballet. The show  is really worth seeing !

Near the Hofburg there’s  the Imperial crypt, also called the crypt of the Capuchin, which houses the remains of many members of the Habsburg family. Their finely worked monumental tombs are real works of art; one of them belongs to Franz Joseph, his wife Elizabeth and their son who committed suicide.

Lunch break at the Augustiner Keller, a typical Viennese place where we enjoyed a  local dish: wurst, sauerkraut and of course beer!

Vienna, Maria Theresien Platz

Vienna, Maria Theresien Platz

In the afternoon we visited Maria Theresien Platz, the square entitled to the Habsburg Empress Maria Theresa: in the middle there’s a huge statue that represents her, at the base of the monument there are the statues of her generals on horseback. On the sides of the square there are two very like buildings in Classical style, that house the Museum of Art History and the Museum of Natural History. In the square garden we couldn’t miss the markets, crowded as usually, and  we stopped there to have a hot cup of mulled wine. The cups  in different colours were boot-shaped and we bought one as a souvenir for 3 euros!

Like every day we had a break in the pastry shop in the vibrant Stephen’s Square, then we had a  short stroll along the main streets until dinner time.

Vienna, Hundertwasser Haus

Vienna, Hundertwasser Haus

8th December: in the morning we took the underground  to  Hundertwasser Haus. This unusual building, a little bit far away from the city centre, but easily reachable by public transport, takes its name from the artist Hundertwasser and was designed as a housing complex in the early 80s. You are immediately caught by  its irregular shapes, sometimes straight, sometimes round or oblique, its ceramic decorations, its colourful columns and  walls. In the past it was also possible to visit the curiously furnished rooms.

We had a coffee in the bar on the ground floor of the building, there we watched a very interesting video, in which the artist  himself talked about  the building of this complex. Not far from here there’s the Art Museum designed by Hundertwasser too, looking very much like  Hundertwasser Haus.

Vienna, Kunstmuseum

Vienna, Kunstmusem, pavimento – the floor of the Art Museum

The uneven floor inside the museum is remarkable. On a wall at the entrance you can read the description of this floor, defined by Hundertwasser as “animated”, like a “symphony, a melody for the feet” that “brings back natural vibrations to man”

Our day continued with a trip on the Prater panoramic wheel, one of the attractions you can’t miss in Vienna.

Vienna, Prater

Vienna, vista dalla ruota panoramica del Prater – view from the Prater panoramic wheel

The wheel is in a big park, Prater, that was originally an imperial game preserve and today it is a real amusement park, full of stalls, cafés and rides; in those days a Christmas tree  in the middle of the square and the Christmas markets  made it  even more pleasant  …it seemed to be in Gardaland! The trip lasted a good half an hour, we didn’t think the wheel  moved so slowly! From the top you can  enjoy a nice view over the city (fog permitting!) and the park. Some of the cabins are elegantly furnished and can be rented for a romantic dinner or special events, such as receptions, birthday parties or anniversary celebrations.

Over the beautiful blue Danube…

After lunch we headed for  the Danube Tower, situated in a park on the bank of the river Danube: there was thick fog and it was rather difficult to reach it, so we wandered through the many paths of the park for a long time before we could see a lighted tall  column…  we were  there at last! The tower is about 250 m tall and offers a 360 degree sight  over the river Danube, the city and the surrounding Viennese woods,  it was a pity we could only  imagine the view! However, it was a pretty good effort to get there, so we went to the top all the same and, to take comfort, we sat in the slowly rotating café for a tasty….slice of cake!!!

In the late afternoon we went back to the city centre and stopped to have dinner at Nordsee restaurant, where you can eat some good fish and chips.

9 dicembre: di nuovo a casa di Sissi

 9th December:  Sisi’s home  again

We spent our last day visiting the huge  Schönbrunn Palace, the   Imperial summer residence, one of the UNESCO world cultural heritage sites. Its  most flourishing time     was during the Habsburg reign, especially under the Empress Maria Theresa in the mid 1700s, and afterwards under the Emperor Franz Joseph who lived here with Sisi. The rooms you can visit are sumptuously decorated in Rococo style and witness the court life habits  at that time.

Vienna, Gloriette

At Schönbrunn you can also admire the wide park, the fountains, the statues and the  many decorative architectural elements. One of the top attractions is the Neptune fountain, a large basin with  huge statues of the god of the sea Neptune and other mythological creatures  in its middle. Behind the fountain there’s Schönbrunn hill, on which the Gloriette stands, a neoclassical colonnaded building:  its central section is dominated by the Imperial eagle, the symbol of the Habsburg dynasty.

Vienna, museo carrozze

La carrozza imperiale – the Imperial couch

The fascinating Carriage Museum belongs to the Schönbrunn estate, too: it houses a collection of carriages used by the Imperial court, including the one used to carry  Sisi on her wedding day and the  black funeral  coach used on the day of her burial.

We had lunch in the little restaurant next to the Carriages Museum, then it was time to go back to the hotel, collect our bags and fly back to Italy, where we got in the evening.
